I've re-engineered the cargo area on my 2020 TRD Pro and was curious what this item coming from the wire loom and attached to the floor?

I'm assuming its just an unused accessory for something like USB ports if there was a third row installed, but since I have a trim that doesn't offer it I'm wondering what else it can it be.

    It's a long list...
It’s the rear cargo area antenna for the smart key system.

Is that both the wire running parallel to the back, and the wire+case running up the middle? Why would something run right up to the middle of the cargo area? In the photo it also almost looks like AC outlet holes

That would be nice, but no, it's just a rectangular block. I was hoping it was a powered accessory so I could use it as a switched power source.

I guess I better move it back to its original location so the smart key works properly.

So what exactly are you doing to modify the cargo area?

I was digging around under there a couple months ago. My 2019 Off Road doesn't have that.

Do you have a smart key? if you didnt that would for sure mean its some sort of sensor for that.

Anything pre-2020 except for the limited will not have the smart key antenna, but if you look you can see the metal bracket to mount it is there, and has been since the 2010MY. Makes you wonder why...

    No smart key.

I'm old school - I like a key ignition with real keys.

If there's a part number on it, some googling could help, too.

Can you just pull that panel up without any hassle? No removal of panels? I notice your bottom channel to the gate isn't pulled out. Need to access that little plug and looking for an easy way.

I'm unsure how DRobs was able to get that foam pad up without pulling the back bottom channel as the carpet is clipped below it so it has to be removed. Otherwise, no other panels, just that back gate channel.

From the repair manual. Those 5 clips can be pried straight up, and you have to work to get the ends detached by trying to spread it out. Have fun.

Thanks - but there is no identifying information at all.

I've just placed it back in its original location and will work around it.

I am almost positive that is the antenna for the key-less entry system. I have come across this in other vehicles, and that looks very similar.

You can pop up that channel rear plastic trim piece by pulling up on the middle. I didn't take it off completely just enough to unclip the carpeting.
Wanted to see what was available under there for holes for mounting a Smittybuilt Vault.

    Didn't find anything worthwhile.

I think you might have answered your own question.

The bracket's probably there because basic assembly is the the same for all 4Runners.

Since the Limited needed the bracket, all 4Runners got it.

Cut all the wires to it and then watch for something that does not work any longer. That way you will know for sure. You are welcome.
