Hello Everyone. Im new to the 4Runner. I finally found one I like and doesn't have a timing cover leaking and a P0016 code. I realized it does not have the towing package. Im in Las Vegas very rarely I need to tow about 3000# for long distances. This one does not have a Hitch installed so no tow package. Is there a page that lists what the uplift items are when a tow package installed or a Build Sheet decoder?

You’ll need extra cooling capacity for your engine and transmission. A frame mounted hitch. An electric brake controller. Maybe some air bags or heavier springs in the rear suspension. Depending on how physically large the trailer is, your 4 Runner may not have enough wheel base to dominate the trailer. They say a properly equipped 4 Runner is rated for 5000 lbs in the manual, and if you’re careful, possibly so, but not 100% in some situations.
Pulling 3000 lbs for long distances will be a chore driving in a 4 Runner, imho. Doable, but not fun to do on a routine basis. Put that same trailer behind an F250 diesel and you won’t even know it’s there, that’s the difference.

Thanks OTG, For responding a the noobie. I did just sell my F-350 7.3 so you hit the nail on the head. I was hoping to determine if a Tacoma or the like had a larger capacity cooling package that might be an easy swap. I believe I’ve found only two transmissions were used being E code on 2WD or F code 4WD. On the Fords, gearing, springs and coolers made the only difference Going to F-450 load capability. I have much to learn with these 4runners. I have had an 2006 and a w 2012 Tacoma in the past but never towed with them. I’m thinking there is interchangeability in the platforms and I’ve found the external trans cooler installations outlines here as well. I’m trying to do my due diligence before I have a problem not after so the hunt is on.

I towed an aluminum 2 horse trailer with a 2nd gen Tacoma and it was great! I’m a firm believer in not running more than you need to do the job. Guys use a 4 Runner for towing, but it’s not ideal because of the short wheelbase imho.

Btw, my apologies for not welcoming you to the forum, nvmike24! This is a place with a lot of collective knowledge and experience, and it’s good to have yours added to the mix as well.
