A friend of mine just bought a 2020 4Runner SR5 premium. She wanted to black out the emblems and I saw they make kits for it but none of them have these 2 little ribs on the front grill. What has everyone else been doing? Paint, plastidip, or is there an actual black out overlay for it?

Unscrew the two screws and tab behind each piece then paint them.

Just pay shipping and they can have this.
Send it out and have the chrome powder coated? Came out of a 2020

thank you! Just got my 2020 and blacked out the emblems, but these two chrome/silver grill ribs stick out like a sore thumb. I didn't know they could snap out of the grill. So it is pretty easy to remove the two chrome pieces? I'll plastidip them then.

Yeah, it's very easy but I broke one of the tabs. The screw holds them together so it's not a big deal.

Do you have any pics to see where the screws and tabs are located?

The screws are short phillips head, directly behind the little chrome strips. There is not much room in there, and it may be hard to get a pic. Mine came out very easily. I ended up breaking both of the little chrome tabs, but it did not affect reattaching the strips in any way.

No I don't but the small screws are on each corner behind the chrome bars. You just have to feel for them and the tab is in the center. I rough up the chrome pieces with light sand paper then spray painted them.

How well does the plasti-dip hold up? I've painted grills in the past only to see them speckled with chrome a year later because of all the rock chips.

I don't have a long term answer, as it has only been about 4 months. I put on about 8-10 coats of the dip, and I think that makes a difference. I will say that Arizona, has so many rocks flying around everywhere, that it is one of the only states where your auto insurance has to cover windshield replacement completely, for free, with no deductible. So far I do not have any chips, or areas of damage to my front valence.

No long term answer here either, as it's only been 2 months on mine... but no chrome showing yet. I applied about 5-6 coats and let the two pieces dry overnight.

This is my first experience with plasti-dip, but it seems like it will hold up better than paint. Plus, if it starts to chip or look bad, it's easily peeled away and reapplied.

My kid spent half a day years back on his grill. Ran it through the carwash couple weeks later and had to redo it. I would powder coat them or at minimum would wrap them

Am I the only one who likes chrome ? If it fits in a 2019 limited, I’ll take it. More chrome!

Not sure if it fits a 19... I think they changed them out for 20s to make room for the radar stuff

Is the chrome plastic or is it the chrome plating with the copper underneath? If its plastic, bleach will strip the chrome and paint will stick better.

You have to wonder why the design gurus @ Toyota decided to put that chrome glitz there...it seems that's the first thing '20 owners want to get rid of...

To me, it looks fine on the models with chrome/silver emblems and valences. And I actually like the design. It's something slightly different than the 19s, but definitely don't like the black rectangle on the lower grill(radar/safety).

My emblem and valences are already black from the factory, so it made zero sense to have those chrome when everything else around it is black. THAT part, I don't get... guess Toyota ran out of money to make separate ones for the Venture and Nightshade.

howdy- long time Taco owner, first time 4runner owner. Came here for this very question on my 2020 TRD off-road premium. Emblems are blacked out & those chrome pieces are driving me nuts. Stealership wanted $100 to wrap them.
Any one find out if they are plastic yet?

I had a sheet of vinyl handy. My wife has a small shirt and decal business. A 12inX12in sheet of vinyl costs $1.00. It turned out better than I imagined but could of been easier and better had i removed them to apply the vinyl. Now I want to replace the headlights, taillights and turn signal on the side mirrors to get rid of all of the chrome...

How hard is it to wrap them (or anything)? Is it durable? Has to be better than plasti-dip.

Honestly its pretty easy, the vinyl stretches with a lil heat. I just did this last week but I'm sure they'll last. If they fall off I'll just do it again, it's cheap.
I was gonna go the plastidip route but figured that would chip easily.

If those ribs aren't functional and removable you can always consider billet inserts. That's the route I went.
