I've had tons of pet snakes since I was a kid. Started with a ringneck that I caught at about 10-12 years old, then a garter, then corn, King, pythons, boas... Kept snakes up until I was around 25-28 years old and one of my pythons ripped my finger up pretty bad. Then I was done.

My daughter now has a garter snake. It's cool. Eats pinky mice, minnows, and worms.

Here in Florida we have tons of snakes. See moccasins nearly every time I go fishing. Have seen Coral, corn, and black rat snakes on my property. Seen King snakes, Rattlers, water snakes, ring necks, garter... Plenty of snakes around here in the woods too. I normally leave them alone... Unless it's a poisonous snake on my property, then I kill it. I don't kill any snakes in the wild unless they are being aggressive or coming at me as I'm trying to back away from them.

Can anyone name this snake? It’s found from Canada, to Honduras, and the eastern half of the US.
Hint: she is gravid and gives birth to live young..
Hint: I found her while weedeating around some “decaying” leaves....

I had an emergency call today. Snake IN the house. I ran over but it disappeared. Said it was big and struck a few times. I’m on call for when it shows back up..
There was a vent “lifted”, may be in the HVAC system....

Just caught this guy. Spotted it swimming across the lake then pulled a sneak attack when he made it to shore. Yes, I got bit..,,036B8E34-589B-428E-B01D-D605DF83A601.jpg

I don’t mind snakes except when they’re in the water. They can sure swim faster than I can.

You are nuts! If I see any snake, I kill it. I even chase them down with a mower.

It’s OK, you can kill them if they are a nuisance to you.......it’s not like they are endangered or anything.......it looks like the Garter snake had a run in with somethin judging from the scar near its tail....

Good post. Many snakes are killed because people are afraid. I enjoy having them around. As you said they keep the vermin down. Look up snakes for your region, keep pictures of the live ones so you can show your friends what you find out 4 wheeling.

I apologize but I'm not a snake person. I grew up in central Texas and we had tons on snakes around, in our yard, getting into the house. Not much internet in those days so my first instinct it to eliminate first and ask questions later.

They are all over down here. Live and let live, they keep the rodent population in check. Roadrunners love to kill 'em and eat 'em.

We have rattlesnakes up on Georgian Bay, and other than a few non venomous species such as water snakes, fox, garter and black snakes it’s pretty tame around here, snake-wise. They’re part of the natural order, and kind of an indicator of a healthy ecosystem. Like others have said, they eat small rodents, frogs and lots of insects. Mostly they prefer an isolated life and avoid humans. My wife has a big garden on a side slope and we have a big garter snake that lives in amongst the stone steps and a few large stones in the garden. He mostly keeps out of the way, but he’s often visible sunning himself on a rock. Live and let live. He doesn’t hurt me, so why would I hurt him?

I used my walking stick to persuade this one to get back off the trail.

Seen in the yard so far in 2020:

2 ribbon snakes, both appear to have been attacked by cats; 1 was the largest I've seen, or it wasn't a ribbon snake
2 speckled king snakes, 1 was a beautiful 2 ft long snake
    1 baby copperhead

*oh and forgot 1 tiny snake with a solid brown/grey skin, couldn't identify it and wonder if it was too young to show any spotting.
