Hi all, Just picked up my Gen 1 4Runner this past week and looking forward to reading everyone's thoughts. This will be a gradual project but feel like I'm starting with a pretty clean, original truck. Rear fenders/quarters have some bubbling from rust so I plan to address that to stop the cancer. Hearing that I should address the rear suspension. Would like thoughts on whether the 'rake' is excessive and if in fact new springs will correct it rather than a lift. First picture is mine... second is what I envision. I'm in Wisconsin so I want to remove the top (summer only from now on..)

Welcome! I like where you're going with this. Let's get a build happening!

    My thoughts:
    1. Get rust managed.
    2. Clean engine bay and undercarriage really good so you can spot leaks.
    3. Get it all mechanically solid if it needs it.
    4. Clean up interior really good, fix broken things.
    5. Keep suspension reasonable and just enough to fit some sexy 31's or 32's with some nice looking wheels/tires.

This looks like a super cool project, love these old 4Runners.

    Newbee questions,
Shifting into 1st gear or reverse I need to push the clutch fully to the floor. All other shifts seem comfortable and clean with a much shorter throw. Should I be concerned about the Clutch? Is this a 'safety' thing? Can the clutch 'throw' be adjusted? Is everything just fine?

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
I don't know about individual gears. That sounds more like the actual transmission, not the clutch.
Having said all that, yes the clutch throw CAN be adjusted. Get the FSM. It has a very good, step-by-step on how-to adjust the clutch pedal height, throw, and so on. Pretty easy, really.
There are a number of FSM in PDF format on this site, as well as some others. The actual, paper version is pretty rare, and of course, people don't want to turn loose of them, so pretty expensive. Either way, get it. It will save you a TON of difficulties, as well as a lot of typing the questions in there.
At the very worst, I can put the "clutch page" from the FSM from the 86-89 4Runner on here for you, but you're really better off getting the FSM for yourself.

BTW, welcome to the forum. Tons of good info on her and several other Toyota specialty forums. Places like Yotatech, and so on.
I wish you the best of luck!
    Pat☺

You got a really good "base" to start with. I dont think it'll take alot of time, not money to get to your ideal goal. Would like to stay updated on your journey. So please post as you turn it into your dream T4R.
