Hey all! I just traded my 2007 Tacoma TRD for an 05 4Runner Sport 4WD. It's got 177k miles and overall it's in respectable shape. A little rust here and there, couple things that were just kinda neglected etc. I wanted to get some input on where to start making improvements after giving some context on my immediate steps.

Always been a synthetic oil and K&N filter guy so that will happen this weekend.

The gas cap cover pops open without pulling the lever so I'm assuming it's a cable issue?

There's a shake on braking from speed, especially downhill. Mechanic said rotors hadn't been rotated maybe ever so I ordered a full set of rotors and pads from Powerstop. Any other input on that issue would be appreciated.

There's a rumble/shake around 60-65mph that I'm assuming is because the tires need balanced. Will get them balanced next week before eventually upgrading.

    My main questions are:

    1. What main red flag issues do I need to look for?
    2. What should my next maintenance moves be?
    3. Leveling kit vs suspension lift pros/cons?
    4. Any other advice that I need to know about T4R ownership that I wouldn't have learned driving a Tacoma!

    Thanks everyone!

The main concern would be Head Gaskets, had a slight gasket leak heads were not warped so had them replaced over 2 years ago and runs like new. love the 5 speed transmission seems to have a better jump than the 04

V6 or V8? Drive belts, fluid changes or at least drain and fill, hoses, Timing belt if V8.

It's a solid vehicle. I am not a fan of lifts, mods, etc. I keep cars bone stock. They work best that way.

Some things to check or work to do:

    - transmission oil change
    - front axle oil change (search this site, the drain plug is a beast)
    - transfer case oil change
    - rear axle oil change
    - engine oil and filter change
    - engine air filter change
    - cabin air filter change (access via glovebox removal)
    - new tires and balanced
    - new rotors and pads all around
    - new shocks if needed
    - new hood gas struts
    - new rear liftgate gas struts if needed
    - verify all lights/bulbs work, including instrument panel. The small LEDS are cheap, available and easy to replace.
    - verify A/C blows cold. Evaporator leak is a common high mileage situation, replacement is expensive and time consuming. One can of refrigerant per year is the solution.
    - install bluetooth touchscreen stereo system
    - verify sunroof operation
    - replace headlamps with new Toyota OEM units if hazed
    - coolant top up or replacement if you wish
    - top and bottom coolant hose replacement
    - battery replacement
    - windshield and rear liftgate wiper replacement
    - shampoo and vacuum carpet twice
    - new Toyota OEM floor mats, you will thank yourself for eliminating all smells from the vehicle
