cool thanks for the info sir! Quick question, in the future if I decide to go long travel I can reuse the kings right? I wouldn’t need to get a different set?

You'll probably want to get the extended travel Kings right now if you plan on going long travel in the future.

I think you can re-use those shocks and get +2 or +3.5" UCA and LCAs to go long travel later, but I would double check this with whoever you buy your kings from.

Cool thanks for that, is there a solution for the fronts? I’ve heard that the front can see some pitting on the shaft as well and wanted to protect them as much as possible

Yes, I saw those. I read over on T4r that the shocks had to be disassembled and something added to it in order for them to work. One guy said he did it and it was a pita also he said they aren’t very durable. After one wheeling trip the rears broke

Just got off the phone with King, if anyone else is running into this issue king said that the shock guards are simple to install if the shock/coilovers have been purchased recently. How ever they also said that they have not test fitted them on the 5th gen 4Runner to see if it clears or not. Thinking about taking one for the team and purchasing just to see if they clear. 30 bucks a pop

Are you opposed to a shock boot?

Seems to be the simplest and cheapest option.

King sells shock boots also, $20 a pair, I’ve read of moisture and mud getting stuck in there though..

Extended travel coilover will not work for a long travel kit. The LT kits require a longer coilover, which are about 2" more shock travel. The +2 and +3.5" use the same length coilover

Didnt you talk to King? Guards have not seem to fit well when we've seen them, so its not something we really recommend.

decided not to go that route, their guards don’t protect the lower eyelet I think that’s what it’s called. Trying to find different solution

FYI Last fall I rebuilt my Kings after 50k miles. The rears were pitted and I replaced the rods and ends, but the coil overs were in good enough shape to re use. LE MAE -2012 Build Thread.

I also just cut these Pro Comp boots length wise and zip tied them to the rears on both my trucks and they're holding up really well. You might be able to modify them to work on your COs, but unless your following a Sand Rail really close you might not need any guards.

I also recommend anyone with performance shocks to get their nitrogen pressures checked. I set up my own rig with a no loss chuck and some Gauges on a small tank. Sometimes they ship with little or no pressure and your not getting the shocks full potential if the pressures aren't correct. Always check your pressure at full droop.

These are from the 4th gen because it was in my driveway and easier to crawl under. Same on the 5th though. I don't do much rock crawling here in the sand and swamp, so I don't have the skids, although they might make it easier to mount the boots and of course you will have way more protection. Also I guess you could slide these boots over the shocks before your install and you wouldn't have to cut them length wise, but I wanted the ability to take them off and clean the rods and the main shock body, so I cut them. The AWD of both my trucks are constantly kicking sand and road debris back there so they are definitely needed. Good Luck!!
