Hello I'm new on here. You all seem to be really into it so I figured you'd have the best advice.
I planned on getting a 2020 4runner TRD off rd premium but with the covid19 situation I decided to just wait a few months till the 2021's come out.
Do you guys think thats a good idea or should I wait for the new redesign?
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

We don't know for sure, but all the credible rumors point to Fall 2022 (2023 Model Year) for the 6th gen release. Would you be really bummed if you bought a 5th gen and a couple years later the 6th gen came out?

Do you need a new car right now or can you wait?

We really don't know much about the 6th gen except what makes the most sense from other newer designs like the Tacoma. A lot of people suspect the 6th gen will have a 3.5L engine. Maybe a turbo, maybe not. Probably a hybrid version available. No ideas how it will look.

Do those things appeal to you? If so, wait and see. If not, go buy a 2020 now because you'll probably get the best deal on a new 4Runner now than at any other time due to the Covid situation. 2021's will most likely be no different than the 2020's.

Think you should see how low the dealer will go now.

Car sales are down and I have to imagine depending on area they want to start selling um.

...wait...the new ones are going away from body-on-frame? I mean, I'm probably gonna keep my '19 forever and even planning on buying another older 5th gen anyway at some point, but if the new Runner starts looking like the new Blazers, I'm gonna rage.

It'll still be body on frame.

    It won't be a unibody.

From everything I've gathered, Toyota is moving all its trucks to a shared framed, where the length and width can be easily modified to fit the each vehicle. Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and all the trucks sold in other countries would use this frame with adjustments. The platform is called the TNGA-F (Toyota New Global Architecture - Frame).

There are a lot of gossip articles out there, but this one actually sounds pretty spot on with everything we know so far.

    https://www.tfltruck.com/2020/02/wi...a-and-tacoma-use-turbo-power-sources-say-yes/

Also, I made a mistake in my first post. The 6th gen 4Runner will most likely come out in Fall 2022 (2023 Model Year). I corrected my post above. We know this from a Toyota presentation spy shot that leaked.

The price of the 2021 4Runners will likely increase quite a bit since they introduced the new Trail edition based on SR5 4Runner and it comes with cement color and a few other options. But honestly, there is no best time when it comes to buy a new car. Don't wait and start to shop around If you need a new car right now.

The trail edition is just cosmetic upgrades, correct? (Sema wheels, roof rack, yeti cooler, badging, and cement/army green).

    is that about it?

Sounds about right, it’s just a added trim line, not a facelift. I can’t see that the price will increase, at least not for that reason.

I'd be willing to bet the new Trails have a pretty substantial increase in price. I'm guessing they're going to be more expensive than an ORP.

The Yeti Cooler alone is going to add like $2,000 if we're going by typical car manufacturer mark-ups. ;)

Ok, maybe not $2,000, but you get what I'm saying.

I got an average of 19.7 MPG on my Texas / tennessee round trip in my new 2020 4Runner. That's with C load BFG KO2 tires (stock size 265/70/17).

Sure, new engines will do a bit better, might make a little more power, but that's pretty decent for a 4wheeler you can do Jeep trails with.

I'm oddly old school here, that powertrain is old, but it's so solid I don't want to give it up for a 2MPG increase just yet. (or whatever the improvement will be, but it likely won't be 10MPG).

This is "new" old, and for that...I picked up a 2020 before the new models came about, to ensure I could have caplay and all the goodies, while keeping the mechanical simple and reliable.

I'm waiting for them coolers to come out though.

Was going to get a Yeti but I'll take one that says Toyota on it.

i hear you, but the price would be trim related and not a general increase. Anyways, I hope that the new trail will turn into a flop and force the upper management to have a second thought about the marketing department!

I don's see the point of raising the price on all trims either, but right now,Toyota is really about milking the cow until its dry on the 4Runner.

Yes, not a trim level increase. With the Trail, they're just creating a new edition. One that fits in the SR5 trim, but will have overlap pricing with upper level trims........like the Venture fits in the OR trim but has a similar price to the Limited. That's my take anyways.

I heard, it’s gonna have a crease running down the side like the 3rd Gen?

No doubt, they wanna get there piece of the cake (the overland/off-road market is booming) but even the sleepy guys of the marketing department should notice that the time for the 5th gen is over.
Im sure a lot of you have a different feeling and yes me too, I don’t see a reason to get into the next gen but fact is that the majority of potential customers are asking for something new.

A majority of potential customers aren’t like the folks on the forum. They don’t research. They don’t pay attention to details, mechanical or otherwise. They just pull into a dealer, spot a flashy 4runner with a cargo basket that makes them feel like they’re headed to the mountains or forest someday. And that’s what they desire. The feeling that they’re headed to the mountains or forest someday. And maybe they will. But for the most part, the Trail edition will give them the feeling they’re after. And they’ll pay extra for it.

    and let’s be honest...
“Oh what a feeling it is...”

Remember when Nissan went and redesigned the pathfinder!!! Now it looks like a minivan. I'd be afraid the 6th gen 4runner may turn out something like that.
