Hi, I just bought a new 2018 4runner, 4.0v6, and would like to know if anyone has replaced exhaust, or muffler and increased the power and or gas mileage. is less back pressure a good thing to do on these? I know some v6 engines it will have the reverse effect.

Today, I purchased the AFE Intake, Throttle Body Spacer, and Exhaust (20% off through AFE web). Suggested +36HP total. Intake is on back order until next week. Will post pics and thoughts once installed.

These trucks are not race cars, they are meant to be a serious off road truck. If you really want power there is a super charger if you want to shell out 6k. Other wise preformance mods other than that dont really provide much to these trucks.

Blacked out badges, window deflectors, smoked 3rd brake light. I have a Borla muffler on order as well as some color matched engine cover stickers. I'll be painting the stock wheels soon as well. Falken tires in the fall as well.

Couldn't be any happier. My truck lives in 3rd & 4th gear pulling between 3500 and 5000 rpms (between 5-10K feet).

Had the Gibson cat back and TRD CAI. No graphs to prove it, but the butt dyno didn't feel any difference. I will say, I saw an average MPG increase from 19.4 to 20.1 over the course of 1000 miles.

Best bang for your buck will be pedal commander / sprint booster. Only $300 but greatly improves throttle response and power in the initial part of throttle input. You won’t find anything close to it that improve the day to day drivability at that price point.

Top end gains from basically all exhaust and intake mods (outside of supercharger) are negligibly felt, and predominantly just placebo effect of the noise they make.

Relative to what these trucks are capable of with aftermarket mods, they drive like ice cream trucks off the dealer's lot. Anybody who denies that is well... in denial

A 4R requires a minimum $3K and at times upwards of $10K to make it look, drive, and perform offroad the way they are capable of (tires, wheels, suspension, rock sliders, headlights, additional lighting, roof rack, bumpers, storage, engine & exhaust mods, etc). There are a number of different vehicles in the 35-40K range that I might choose over a bare bones stock 4R

I keep forgetting that a roof rack is required for my 4Runner to go offroad. Maybe the 1600 dollar rack I saw on Amazon will do the trick.

Unfortunately these type of mods tend to make power at the top end, where the motor can use the extra air flow.

The only thing that I would kind of like to try is the S&B cold air intake. I know the factory intake is cold air already, but I've read enough people say good things about the S&B that it intrigues me.

I also feel like this motor makes plenty of horsepower, it just lacks in low and torque. I wish it had more grunt in the 2,000 RPM range, where mine spends most of its life.

Haha! I currently have no roof rack. I'm surprised I don't get stuck the second I leave the pavement.

The only necessary modifications for off-roading are getting real AT or MT tires, and armor if you're playing in the rocks.

Most of the things listed in that post are good to have, but headlights and exhaust mods don't do anything for off-road capability.

I'd be interested to know what other $35-40K vehicles, aside from a Wrangler, @Barcelona Trail would prefer over a stock 4Runner.

A supercharger, or turbo, is the only thing that is going to significantly improve your low end torque.

I would love to find an intake that actually improved fuel economy and/or power, but the general consensus is that they're nothing but noise makers.

I call BS. The manufacturer already has the vehicle in the sweet spot for mpg and performance. Or you think their engineering team said “screw it, leave it like this, let go to lunch “?
A new air filter will not make a difference, the engine is not starved for either air or gas. A pedal commander will not affect that either. a muffler will most likely mess with the optimal back pressure.
There are no performance modes for this vehicle unless you supercharge it. Period.
You wanted better mpg? Buy a different vehicle.

This is an old thread, but, has anyone ever had this engine on a dyno with a wide band O2 sensor to see if the tuners, mods etc are changing anything?
Normally when you open up air, exhaust you need more fuel.
Most ECM/PCMs on newer cars run rich in WOT for obvious reasons. But, everyday driving would be interesting to see what this engine does with air fuel/spark changes along with any mods.

Check out Overland Tailor Tuning. They have a dyno of a stock vs tuned 4Runner. There are definitely gains to be had and while not earth shattering they are consistent throughout the entire RPM range. The tune helps to optimize other mods and definitely improves drivability.

    Thnx, I will.
This vehicle is so heavy, it should have never got a V6... A V8 may same numbers, but there is a difference in the way it pulls..

I agree. I have had a couple of 4Runner's and also a Tacoma. The best thing you can do for it is put on a Magnuson supercharger. It doesnt make it fast but makes it feel like it should. The supercharger gives it the low end torque that is lacking stock. Short of that the only things I have found that make a noticeable difference are the URD y-pipe and tune.

I wish I could. Right now that price is a bit too much. Of course, I know this engine can handle it.
I can install it myself. We shall see, I owe Uncle IRS right now, maybe I can stash a few bucks away monthly...
If I did it, it would get retuned, so its tuned better than a generic tune. I am sure magnuson has a very safe tune. I have no problem tuning for super and specifically for the truck. Its the proper thing to do as all vehicles arent exactly the same.

Completely understand. I'm saving for the supercharger on the 4Runner myself. I have one on my Tacoma and you are right. The Magnuson tune is awful. I had mine tuned and it picked up a ton of power/torque over the Magnuson tune and it drives a lot better. I'm waiting for YotaWerx and OTT to release tunes for the supercharged 4Runner like they have for the Tacoma.

Pedal commander is a joke. It does improve throttle response which is typically at the expense of fuel economy. Get a real tune. The cost is similar and with a real tune from OTT or Yotawerx you actually gain power/torque in addition to having better throttle response. I gained around 1 mpg after the tune.

I will be in Pensacola for a few weeks. I may schedule a retune. Its all OEM, but if they have dyno proof of low end torque improvements, than I am on it.

It makes 370whp. It has the Magnuson supercharger with an 87mm pulley and a tune. Its not a rocket ship but the supercharger and tune fixed all of my biggest complaints with the truck compared to when it was stock or just bolt-ons and tune. It gets up to speed easily, has plenty of power for passing, doesn't downshift constantly to try to maintain speed, etc.

370WHP? Dang, that is allot. How much boost is that? More than Magnusons 5 or 6 psi...

The Tacoma 2gr-fks supercharger makes 6-7 psi with the stock 90mm pulley. With the 87mm pulley it makes 8-9psi.

You have a Tacoma with over 400hp and it's not a rocketship? What is your other car? Hellcat? :boink:

Can you post your Dyno sheet?

Definitely! That's a huge increase over Magnuson's numbers.

I have a Chevy SS sedan that makes 904whp. Forged 416 with a 2650 supercharger. It eats Hellcats for breakfast. LOL Also my 2 previous trucks were a supercharged Tundra and a Roush F-150 so in comparison the Taco is a snail.

Here is a copy of the dyno from OTT of the 90mm pulley and 87mm pulley tune
