Automatic door locking; unlocks but won't lock???

Any ideas why my automatic door locking system will unlock all doors but doesn't work when trying to lock them?

 

What's an "automatic door locking system"?

 

Are you referring to the key fob? Or the lock switch on the door?

Or, if I recall, the older models would lock or unlock all doors by double twisting the key in the door. Is that the feature you're referring to?

 

Hello and thanks for response. I can unlock all doors from key fob and from the main switch / button inside on the drivers door and can also unlock all door locks by double twisting the key as you mention. But none of the above which use to also lock all door locks work any longer. I can unlock all but can no longer lock all. I'm stumped !

 

I wonder if it could be a relay. Or, maybe the locks are controlled by some sort of module that has failed.

Have you checked all of the fuses?

Does the power lock on the driver's door still work?

It seems like the fuse panel under the dash could be the issue. One guy was able to mitigate the issue by pushing in on the fuse panel while hitting the lock switch. Maybe try that and see if you can get the same result. The actual issue could just be a bad connection within the fuse panel.

Hey "That Bass Guy" , thanks again for your research and responses. That other thread from Toyota Nation was very interesting and very long and highlights that this seems to be a fairly common problem with a number of varying remedies that are not successful in every instance.I live in a condo and don't have anywhere to work on my Runner other than our parking lot, which is its own problem. I've been away and haven't had the time yet to really spend a lot of time trying the various suggestions in that other thread and I haven't taken the plunge and replaced that relay / fuse box thing mentioned. I have to reread that other thread again and see if I can figure this out.

What ended up being the reason? Mine is doing the same thing - Doors all unlock by either key in the door or lock switch inside. None will lock unless I maually push the button on all 4 doors.

 

I used to own a Montero Sport 2003 with the same type of problem. The problem was the actuator from the locking mechanism. They get old and also there is a bump(rubber) that with the years disintegrate and cause these type of issues. Good luck.
