Alright, I'm stumped here and any/all help would be greatly appreciated! I have a '04 4Runner Limited with the 4.7L 2UZ-FE and its experiencing a terrible fuel pump issue. I thought the pump was bad initially since it left me stranded so I replaced it. The vehicle drove fine for about 3 weeks after and started struggling again (seemed like it wasn't getting fuel again) and threw a P0171 & P0174 CEL, lean on banks 1 and 2 so I put a fuel pressure gauge on it and found out I was only getting 19psi from the new pump. Obviously that's not good so I swapped the pump again for a new one but now I don't have any power going to the fuel pump therefore the rig won't start. I have checked all connection points and fuses/relays and the only thing I have been able to find is the fuel pump relay isn't getting power, so I replaced it thinking maybe it had a intermittent wiper inside but still no power. I can put my PowerProbe on the pump harness and hear it turn on but will not get 12volts from anywhere else. Has anyone else experienced this and/or dealt with this and has a solution?!

Again thank you very much for your help!20200323_174840.jpg 20200323_174825.jpg 15857766061728294866930396583643.jpg

Mang, that’s a nice 4R!! Reset EFI by pulling fuse? Fuel filter? Some sort of safety feature? Someone who has more experience will chime in I’m sure....

Thank you! It was beat to hell and I have a boat load of hours getting it to this point, unfortunately the last owners did not take care of it so there has been a ton of restoring. Yeah it's a brand new pump and sock (reinstalled yesterday) and I am gonna be checking continuity and grounds in about an hour. I haven't been offroading it at all yet so I'm not really sure where to start with wire checking so I will probably sweep the whole vehicle again. My only other thought is maybe it's a ECU issue but I'm not sure how to diagnose that.

Is it possible that it could be the crank positioning sensor is bad? Beings that the only thing that does not have power in the fuse block is the fuel pump relay under the hood? I was told that if the CPS is bad then the fuel pump relay won't get power?

I hope you get your power issue sorted out. I'm no help there unfortunately. If the PO didn't take care of it, there might be a lot of trash in the tank, which could have caused your low pressure to begin with. Good Luck and let us know how you make out. Oh and by the way, Welcome!

    Thank you for the welcome!

Well I ended up doing a ECM swap and that solved my issue with the power problem at the fuel pump relay. However, I was still only getting 19psi at the fuel rail. So I pulled the fuel pump assembly and inspected it further and what I found was really unbelievable (thank god I took pics of everything otherwise no one would believe me) and disgusting that the last owners would allow this to become this big of a problem. First off, there was no way in hell that I was gonna pay $900+ for a new fuel pump assembly, that being said I was trying to figure out how to bypass the internal fuel filter all together and install a external "replaceable" fuel filter. When I was told that the in-tank filer was non serviceable, that didn't sit right with me. After cutting the "non serviceable" cap off of the assembly with my body saw, this is what I found. I have attached the pictures of everything I did to make her purr like a kitten. This weekend I will be installing new Denso injectors (since the mud has them so blocked up and not holding fuel pressure with the vehicle off), MSD coils, Volant 18947 CAI, JET 69144 MAF, new Mahle intake manifold gaskets, build a cover plate for the fuel filter and a Optima Red Top Battery.

I will post more pics and give updates on the fuel situation after it's done.

Has anyone done the injectors on the 4.7l? If so is it a simple process? I've never done injectors before so any pointers would be appreciated!

    Thanks everyone! 20200404_091524.jpg 20200404_142514.jpg 20200404_142521.jpg 20200404_142521.jpg 20200404_142528.jpg 15862762672124240020642216352846.jpg

Wow! That truck never had more than a 1/4 tank of gas in it. Probably ran dry a few dozen times too. Glad your back up and running.
    Nicely done Sir!

Thanks man! Well I'm the third owner and the last folks that had it lived on a cattle ranch. I'm wondering if they had a rusted/contaminated/muddy stock tank that they kept gas in and were filling it up with that. That's all I can figure. They abused this poor thing but she's getting the tender loving care she deserves now ;) at least the frame is still nice and straight and zero rust.

    Back from the dead.

Touching base here as I suspect I am having the same/similar issue on my GX470.

Long story short - long cranking times, stalling, low power. Not all the time. First CEL was P0353. Changes coils and plugs. Worked for 2 weeks. Came back. GX has 200k on it, been wanting to change pump. Denso pump into the factory sender. New fuel pressure regulator. Worked for about 20-25 miles. Problem returned.

Fuel pressure checked today - 10-12 psi with cranking and idle. Never increases. Bypasses the solenoid, no difference. 12v direct to pump, no difference.

LTFT are pegged, both banks 34%. Now P0171/P0174.

Before I drop the tank again, because the job is a PIA, was wondering if you had any issues after this? Hopefully you are still around. Thanks

I have a similar problem as well with a 2008 4.7L 4runner. I replaced the intake manifold gasket and the fuel injectors with all OEm parts and now for some reason It will start fine cold but if the car is warm it will have an extended crank and stumble. but if you turn it off and turn it back on it will start fine. I have replaced Pump assembly, Pressure reg, fuel Damper, plugs, relay, still have problem. Has anyone had any luck?
