Edit update: What would cause this a p0441 and p2420 code? I replaced the gas cap and the purge valve. The codes come on randomly - I can drive 500 miles and it'll come on or sometimes after 10 miles. Any ideas?

Well, since selling my 2010 silver trail with 67k miles I bought a 2013 silver trail with 170k miles. p0441 and p2420 evaporative emission system incorrect purge flow/ switching valve control circuit high.

Where should I start? Not finding much info for 5th gens on this. Do I start with the gas cap? It looks to be a new aftermarket one (not OEM at all). Should I purchase an OEM one first? Don't want to throw money at things especially since I bought this thing and shipped it here without seeing it in person and can't have my wife telling me I shouldn't of done that

The code first came on only 10 miles after unloading it from the semi. I reset it and drove 200 miles and then it came on again.

I'd go with gas cap first.

    • EVAP Canister Purge Valve– The most common issue that causes the P0441 trouble code in your Toyota 4Runner is going to be the vapor canister purge valve. When it goes bad, it typically causes issues with the vehicle’s idle speed. This is especially true right after you fuel up. It’s really easy to replace. There are a few clips that you need to find and remove. This is often the problem. They are really cheap on Amazon too. Always make sure to verify the fit for your vehicle. There’s a tool to check the fit right there.
    • Faulty Purge Control Solenoid– There is a solenoid that controls the operation of the Purge Valve. When it fails, the purge valve will no longer be able to operate properly. When this happens P0441 will almost always throw.
    • Bad Vacuum Line– If the vacuum line going to the purge canister has failed, that’ll cause the P0441 code to show up for sure. This is worth taking a look at especially if you live in a drier climate. Vacuum leaks are pretty easy to detect as well. Here’s a good article on how to find them from Popular Mechanics.
    • Gas Cap– The gas cap going bad can cause P0441. This is due to the fuel tank not having the right amount of pressure with a bad cap. If you are getting a message to tighten your fuel cap when it is tightened already, you should replace the fuel cap before doing anything. They are affordable, and easy to replace.
    • Wiring Issue to the Purge Solenoid– Due to the location of the purge solenoid, it is not uncommon for the wiring going to it to fail. Here’s a great article from Backyard Mechanic that explains how to detect a short circuit, if you think this may be the cause. https://www.backyardmechanic.org/how-to-find-a-electrical-short-on-most-any-vehicle/.

Awesome, thanks! Yeah there is no rough idle or anything so will try that. Hopefully that is it!

Put in an OEM cap couples weeks ago. That didn't do anything.
Replaced the purge valve solenoid thingy yesterday. Easiest 2 minutes of my life. Will see if that fixes it!

I have changed the cap, charcoal canaster, purge valve and vac line to and from the valve, with no success. I even took it to the dealer to have it diagnosed, they said purge valve. Even though I checked the valve twice and it checked out good both times, I still changed it but no success, still random code. I will probably taKe it back to the stealer since their diognosis was wrong and see what they say. Is there a silonoid to this valve, does Nyone know?

Let me know what the dealer says. I do not know about the solenoid to the valve.

Good to know about all you changed, I figured thats what would happen so havent done all that yet. Its annoying

This is going to sound weird - but,... check your grounds. Clean up every connection going from battery’s negative terminal back to the chassis. Remove - wire brush, and tighten everything down nicely.
You’d be surprised how many electrical gremlins and intermittent issues are caused by this very culprit. And your car is of age where it is ripe for such issues.

I found the blue wire coming out of the charcoal canister, just under the factory loom and tape, was pinched and half broke somehow. Noticed a little green corrosion just peeking out of the loom, pilled it all back, cut piece out and replaced, no more codes for months.
