2 things I'm looking to fix on my 95 4runner

Good day everyone, bought my first 4Runner this week from a little old lady in Minneapolis(go ahead laugh but its true) LOL!
About the 4Runner, it has the V-6 auto full power, stock 31x10.5, and 144K miles she was the 2nd owner and provides me with all the maintenance records, not pretty mostly due to 20 years of Minnesota rust but the interior is near mint and the verifiable maintenance records and good mechanical condition made it a pretty good deal.

My 2 issues are as follows:

the check engine light comes on after its been running for 15 to 20 minutes, however after the truck is turned off and restarted the light is out. I have never heard of check engine lights clearing on there own. My mechanic says its probably the O2 sensor(s), anybody else have or experienced this issue?

the tailgate window won't go down, not sure if its the switch or the motor? Is there a fuse specifically for that window? The owners manual shows a couple of fuses behind the glove box wondering if those might be for the window?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    Congrats on the truck.

The '95 is still OBD1. That means it's got engine codes, but you can't get them with a scanner. You have to jump the test port under the hood with a paperclip or similar, and then turn the key to On and count the flashes of the Check Engine light. Here's a walkthrough: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TroubleCodes/index.shtml. I think your test port will be similar to the late-22RE test port. I know the trouble codes will be the same. Get whatever codes the engine has stored and you'll have a much better idea of what the motor is doing.

If the tailgate won't go down with the switch in the cab or by turning the key in the tailgate, it's probably a power issue. That could be at the fuse, or at the relay, or a loose ground, or a dead motor, who knows. A $5 multimeter from Harbor Freight will help you isolate the issue.

Thanks for the help, wondering if there is a way to lower the window with the inside panel removed? My main reason is to access the rear taillight to replace a burnt out brake light bulb.

Yup, you have to take off the inside panel. Once there, you can maybe jump 12v straight to the motor to get it to lower, if that doesn't work then you'll have to take the motor and regulator out and let the window slide down.

Occurs to me to check and make sure the rear window wiper is seated properly - if it's not, there's a cutout that won't let you roll the window down...

You were right, wiper wasn't properly seated! This sight rocks thanks for saving me cash on repairs and a potential ticket!!

That was a hell of a good suggestion, I’d have never thought about the rear wiper position. And now I’ll never forget it !
