Because when I pulled the oil cap off to add oil their was a thick tan-gray sludge in the cap, the consistency of whip cream

I assume you have a bunch of short trips...

I would say the application of engine flush is generally a bad idea BUT you should be sure what you got in the first place!

That whipped cream is emulsion probably caused by short trip uses. In that case it doesn’t help to use some cleaning additive. You’ll have the same sludge soon again, what would help is to avoid short trips. To get ride of the sludge for now is use the car for longer trips (min.30miles) until that sludge disappears and then do the oil change.
maybe I’m wrong and uou don’t drive short trips but then again let’s get to cause and effect before.

I think you might have some bigger problems than needing an oil flush.

Unless like Matze said you only drive short trips.

Might check your pcv system. If it isn't working you can get the sludge.

Probably not a head gasket. Op I wouldn't buy oil flush, not necessary.

BTW that's not me stating a head gasket issue I'm no mechanic. That is a cut/paste from the internet but head gasket is often suspected as the culprit for such crap on the filler cap.

Its usually caused by short trips, rarely its a head gasket.

I have used Amsoil engine flush with good results on an old Chevy once. It did what it said it would do.

As WallyT4R mentioned you can receive good results, that of course depends on the engine. On f... up engine that got bad oil before etc. there is a big chance, a engine that was taken care off and got always good oil on a regular bases I wouldn’t expect much. Engine needs some “love” and that doesn’t mean just regular maintenance, it’s as well your driving. I avoid short trips, always let her warm up properly before I hit the accelerator hard. Warm up means you got the rpm up between 2-3k for a drive of around 20min (depending on outside temp.). There is research about that, a cold engine always wear, so high rmp on a cold engine means high wear but for a short time since the engine will heat up quick, low rpm on a cold engine means low wear but for a long time since the engine needs longer to warm up - the best is the middle way.

I have used this on my 4Runner before. Can't say if it helped or not but my oil samples are coming back good(as expected). I run it every 50K miles, figure it helps keep everything clean. AMSOIL for the win.

    I bought my 05 V6 4runner sport last july with 261,000 miles.
The engine is running great but it has plenty of sludge in the motor.
When I open the oil fill cap you can see inside the cap the accumulated dirt in their and also in the filler neck.
I clean them and the build up I took out looks like 2 tablespoon of build up its really nasty.
What I did is to change the oil right away with walmart supertech 0W -20 then drain it after 2000 miles. Next oil change was 3000 miles after that
I do every 4,000 miles still with 0W-20 supertech oil.
Now I have almost 275,000 miles on it.
The engine doesnt burn any oil so quiet and doesnt have any small traces of leak.
Yes I am using walmart supertech 0W-20 oil not high mileage.

My favorite is Moly flush. Stuff is incredible, you see the metal where you're pouring the stuff down the filler tube turn bright again.

I got into engine flushes due to having made the mistake of buying a MB Bluetec (diesel). The wife does a lot of short trips (luckily the truck is parked indoors, so that helps), so the flushes are done at every oil change, which is at 5k miles. Matter of fact, I do the flush, then refill with cheapass oil. Run her for 10 minutes around the block, then drain and refill with premium Amsoil high-zinc Competition Series synthetic, as well as replace the oil filter.

Trangely, I never thought to try some on my 07' FJ Cruiser. She's due for an oil change and with 140k miles on her, I think I'll treat her to dinner and a movie...
