22RE choking and wants to die.....sometimes

    So I just finished a 1500 mile trip with the runner and when i went to drive it the next day it started to misfire and lose power almost immediately after i started it.

    I was able to limp it to a parking lot. It would shake and misfire and sometimes kill itself before i got it to clear up. my first idea was that i had a clogged fuel filter and so i tried to get it to backfire by revving it to the sky. instead of backfiring it cleared itself up and i was able to drive it back to my house.

    now the next morning comes along and i decide to try driving the vehicle again. This time i let the truck idle in the street till it was up to temperature. it took a few times as i would come out to check and the truck would have killed itself.

    Anyways, after the truck warmed up i took it on a 10mile highway test drive. i litterally got to the exit where i was gonna turn around and the car cuts out for a second, then cuts back in. it happens twice one the way there and doesnt cut out on the trip back.

    now during the trip back the check engine light came on for about 4 seconds but turned off before i could snap a picture.

    I have a 1985 4Runner with a 22R-E

    Heres my questions.

    My plan was to go ahead and replace the fuel filter (and probably relocate it) Do you think this sounds like a likely culprit?

    How would i pull the check engine light codes?

    I had multiple times a check engine light on and when I replaced the O2 sensor with a Denso along with plugging off my vacuum line to my EGR it ran Great!!! Try the EGR vacuum line first...just my opinion...if that doesn't work the cheap O2 sensor is easy to replace try it. These OBD1 fuel injector systems are really funny. Please let me know if this helps...it did mine. The last thing I changed when it wouldn't start hot was with a Denso fuel pump under the passenger side bench seat...under a plate...another cheap easy fix that changed everything...just another thought...it takes an hour to change tops

    How did it run after replacing the fuel pump and the plugging off the EGR?

    exact same except fuel pressure gauge was reading 30-40 instead of 0

    Heck, I'm still running a 4Runner, 22RE engine, with the factory pump in it. Still runs fine, although I've never tested the pressure. I've had it since 96 or so...

    My 87 pickup, with a 22R engine, on the other hand, is on it's third fuel pump. The other two were seeping, I guess you'd call it. Very slow, small leak someplace, usually around the seal between top and bottom halves. Since it's attached to the side of the engine, I felt that it was pretty important NOT to have a fuel leak there, so I replaced them as soon as I smelled the fuel leak. Pretty dangerous place to have even a small fuel leak :)

    I keep the fuel filters replaced on the recommended schedules on both trucks. Even though the one in the 4Runner is such a pita to get to... :frustrated:
    My biggest trouble with the pickup's filter is that I keep forgetting to clamp off the line from the tank, and I get a facefull of gas most of the time. YUCK!
    Thank goodness for safety glasses. I've only got one eye left, and I kinda like to keep it in good shape.o_O

    I'm out of ideas that haven't been tried for your trouble, though. Sorry!

    I think i figured it out. i think its my TPS. ive got injectors coming in on friday and i got a shop that can test the tps sweep next week if the injectors dont fix it.

    the tps has been replaced by the previous owner but it could be broken now

    Or, it could be misaligned. Once you get the new injectors, try running through the TPS alignment checks in the FSM.

    Just a thought. I get so few any more...

    I was a Sergeant. Not an officer. What was called a Non-Commissioned Officer. Means it didn't take an Act of Congress to make me a leader. Commissioned Officers are "commissioned" by Congress.
    The average officer is, to be honest, concerned with how he looks to superiors. Most NCOs are concerned with taking care of their men, and getting the mission accomplished, in that order. Whatever that mission may be.
    It's gotten to be where "sir" is almost an insult to NCO's. :D
