K&N kit on a 2018 Off-Road, what an expensive piece of crap.

    None yet, got it yesterday!
Spent a couple hours cursing at this thing last night, instructions are mediocre at best, had to relocate the horn (is that a 2018 specific thing or did they forget to mention that?) part of the housing pushes against the PS pump, and I had to dremel out part of the engine cover just to get it to fit!

I mean yeah it sounds cool, but WTF, this thing costs over $300?

Either your install is incorrect, or you got a cobbled together, non-specific kit. If you find yourself cutting stuff up and it's not in the instructions, stop right there. You don't need a "cold-air intake" that bad.

Thanks for the useless condescension! Per the title, it's a brand new, out of the box, $332 K&N kit. Per my verbiage above, the instructions inferred that it had quantities of parts (in sealed bags) that were incorrect. Per the pictures it matches the bolt patterns of the PS pump and such, as their removal was required in order to install.

If you're still bored, do you have anything helpful to add?

Sure! I would have contacted K&N before doing any modifying that wasn't specifically in the instructions. It seems kinda silly to cut up a brand new $40,000 truck to mash on a $300 gimmick, and then complain on a forum instead of contacting the manufacturer .

OEM is what I'll be keeping. I realized K&N was gimmick, noise, and oily MAF sensor. Luckily I figured this out on my 1999 Jetta.

On my 95 Tacoma, I did the deck plate mod and it might give a couple extra ponies, I think I can tell a difference but not certain. The best part is it is sealable.

I just replaced the filter cartdriges and not the houseing, only because they were washable, saves me money than replaceing every 5k miles.

K&N lets more air, dirt, and oil thru. Filter Cartridge or not. I won't be using them ever again.

Today, I purchased the AFE Intake, Throttle Body Spacer, and Exhaust. Suggested +36HP total. Intake is on back order until next week. Will post pics and thoughts when installed.

The pros & cons are rampant about this subject! All I have to offer is that we got; a TRD intake on the 40% off sale.
No proof that one is better then the other that I know of...
Here are pics of mine for comparison as no one else is offering any.
    I don't notice a hp difference but I do hear a difference.
Only modification I had to make was to separate the MAF loom to extend it to reach new location (1 of 10 on difficulty).
Hope it helps & yes, I left the engine cover off.
    Good luck,
    Ryan

Sooo much cooler looking with the engine cover off. Why covers were introduced I’ll never know. For ALL the things that manage to get passed the hood?

As our state doesn't do yearly inspections! I could put headers & straight pipe my 4runner if I wanted! LMAO
However, on my diesel work trucks I must be cautious about what I do. If DOT pulls me over & finds illegal hardware that is a big no no!
Also, nothing under the hood (altered or removed) would add any significant power.
It isn't a turbo & more fuel like a diesel would make it run wrong.
I just need to borrow $7k for a blower. Is that okay? LMAO
Fuck the EPA. They ruined diesels & will not stop. Look into large factories not passenger vehicles!
The EPA has way to much power if you ask me.

Right. I just got a kick out of it. I can't imagine starting to cut parts off of my truck to fit an aftermarket intake, especially since most of them don't really do much.

I put a Volant set-up in my '03 and all it did was make noise, and reduced my fuel economy. Same with the intake I installed on my Scion TC.

I just haven't found them to be worthwhile.

If you like noise, and the way they look, it's probably worthwhile to you.

    I installed an AFE on my FJ. Honestly don't see any difference performance-wise, but;

If I mash the gas pedal in town, the noise created by the AFE causes little old ladies to keel over from heart attacks and young children to wet their pants and run to their mommas LOL.

I paired the CAI w the throttle body spacer and the cat back exhaust as well as a Pedal Commander... The intake and exhaust notes alone are impressive. That said by buddy has an SR5 w 265s that isnt lifted... I beat him by more than a truck length any time we get after it around town - and it's not even close on the highway as we climb through the mountains on I70

Interesting. In the old days, adding a throttle body spacer added to your top end but stole power down low. Did you find this to be the case? I'm guessing that the Pedal Commander may be tricking you into feeling that the engine's just as zippy off-idle as before.

There's no question the PC makes the truck MORE FUN to drive and for $275, its worth every penny. That said, the PC does not add HP, however it does remove the lag that exists in the communication between my foot and the engine's response to my efforts

The other thing worth noting is that my truck is in 3rd and 4th gear a lot climbing from 5K to 10K feet between Denver and the mountains... which given my mods, does allow the truck to pull like a mother when she lives in the 4-5k rpm range

I hear ya! In any case, I will definitely be getting the PC if I notice throttle response lag. That shit drives me crazy. My wife's X6 has serious lag, drives me up a wall....

Drive by wire is for the birds. Old school carb'd motors with mechanical linkages are where it's at
