Hey everyone, just picked up my first 4runner a couple weeks ago. Its a 2020 TRD-ORP in MGM with sunroof and KDSS. Loving the car so far but I have a couple concerns and Im hoping I could get some answers.

    1. When I first bought the car there was a melting plastic smell and some white fumes coming up inside the engine near the firewall area. The dealer said the cars are just coated in something before they are shipped from Japan and it seems to have gone away already but I was wondering if anyone experienced this?

    2. At idle the engine sounds almost like a diesel with a thrumming sort of noise, normal? It sounds like any other V6 when its driving, only when idling.

    3. The heater smell is sort of sweet, I initially thought it was coolant smell but it only comes when I turn the heater on and goes away if I switch the AC on. Normal?

Welcome! Just bought 2020 4R super white SR5 4x4 - pretty basic compared to your ride. Had only 6 miles on it when I bought it and I've not noticed any strange odors or noises at any speed and have put 500+ miles on it so far.

It might have too much oil in it. I would check the dipstick right away. Next, run some Exxon through it. Certain gas stations just sell crap. Then make sure nobody hit your engine with “slurry slayer”, it’s a coagulant used to solidify concrete slurry. We use this all the time doing “wet” concrete grinds. I’ve seen a couple oil pans dropped on YouTube and they’re like “what the hell”.....Does the 20 have a locking gas cap? If not I would purchase one for a few dollars...

All normal sounds and nothing to be concerned about. Between me (two 3.4s and two 4.0s) and my family (two 3.4s and one 4.0), we have owned several Toyota trucks and they all make that exact same noise.

    #1 and #2 are normal
#3, maybe you have a sensitive nose? I bet it will dissipate soon.
    Enjoy your ride!
