Reclamp or replace CV boot?

Hi All!

I have 2006 V8 Sport Edition and was recently told that my CV boots are leaky and need to be replaced. Fortunately, it doesn't look like any of them are torn or leaking a lot, but the one on the right does look like it might have a small leak at the clamp? Should it be replaced or would it be possible to just replace the clamp?

Looks like a tiny leak if that. You aren't spitting grease, so I wouldn't worry about it. You could repack them and reclamp if you think you have lost too much grease.

 

I had a CV leak in my truck, I just repacked and reclamped and kept an eye on it. It was fine. That being said do whatever your comfortable with.

 

I’d opt to just replace the boot especially if you have the experience. The OEM boot kit is about $45 but the dealership will charge you $400 for labor. (I rarely use the dealership but still like to get a baseline quote from them) On the other side, most of the guys I know on TW use the lifetime warranty cheapos from the box auto stores. If you plan to break any, this seems to be the route!

Also, mines looked like that for the past year or so... still going strong!

 

Is there a diy guide that shows how tore-clamp and repack a CV boot?

 

I would replace the whole thing. They're cheap and youre going to have to pull it to re boot it anyhow might as well just replace it. Like others have said most come with a lifetime warranty.

 

I just did both of my cv axles with this Toyo kit from Amazon. was easy.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses! I did some more crawling around and it looks like my front struts have just started to weep a bit, so I'm going to tackle the CV boot(s) and struts at the same time when the weather warms up. Will definitely keep an eye on it in the meantime.
