I am ready to upgrade my 4 Runner's exhaust. Note that the exhaust system is not necessarily bad or defective, I am just going for that deep sound.

Question # 1. Should I consider replacing the catalytic converter or just go muffler back to tips?

Question # 2. I have looked at Borla and Magnaflow. Does anyone have a recommendation on brand?

I put a Cherry Bomb Vortex on my '01 3.4L. Made it a bit deeper and more aggressive sounding but you can hear that thing coming from a mile away. My brother owns it now and it's easy to know when he's arriving anywhere. I do like the sound of it though.

Thanks for posting the exhaust question about your 97 4Runner. That model year is a 3rd generation. You might get more responses by posting the question in that section of the site.

I put a Magnaflow on my 98. I do really like the Magnaflow. It has a nice tone to it. Had a flowmaster on my Tacoma and definitely like the magnaflow more. I do need to replace the cat though. It rattles when it's cold and it's really starting to annoy me Mine has 165k on it so may be a good idea to think about replacing the cat. Hopefully this helps.

I put a 22” Bullit muffler on my 02, and really liked the sound.
