It's Fall here in the Pacific Northwest and that means it gets foggy quite often.

I've been driving since the 80's and I thought most people knew the basics of driving in fog in regards to lights. But on my daily 15 mile commute to work on a rural highway, I am amazed at how many people don't know the fundamentals. They would seem obvious to someone with a bare minimum of common sense, but apparently that is in short supply these days.

First of all, turn your lights on if it's foggy. Even during the day. I am astounded by how many people I pass that are nearly completely invisible in white or silver cars because they don't have their lights on.

Second, when it's night and you're in heavy fog, having your brights on actually reduces your visibility because it is reflecting more light back. I can't believe how many people I see driving around in heavy fog with their brights on.

Keep your low beams on and you'll see better. Even better, get some amber-colored driving light bulbs. They cut through the fog.

    Again, don't be this person...

May I add another pro tip?
When it is very foggy or raining hard; get in the right lane & focus on the solid white line. Most have glass particles in them to help reflect the light.
Drive defensively and safe you all!

Another addition... if you have to pull over for any reason at all, even for a few seconds, turn on the flashers.

Also, attempt to stop under a light. That makes you most visible and safe.
This may all sound dumb; but you never know what people have been taught.
There is no reason to be in a hurry if it endangers you or others!
    Be safe. :turtleride: LMAO

It’s pretty bad how much morons have a meet up on the road 24/7 and even worse is that they got attracted to bad conditions!
driving in foggy weather and playing on the phone, how can you expect them to think about the light as well?

But stupidity is not longer surprising, what was surprising me is that the fogs on the 5th gen can’t run without low beams. Can’t belief that a engineer design it that way but the whole light system on the 4runner is a little questionable… who knows, maybe the chef of the Toyota factory canteen designed it in his spare time

I live in the PNW as well and drive to and from work in the dark ( this time of year usually in the fog as well.) If you can't see, SLOW DOWN. I don't mean to an unsafe speed but do the speed limit/flow of traffic. I don't know how many people I see driving 80 in a 55 when you can't see 100ft infront of your rig. The 2 minutes your going to gain from driving that fast isn't worth what could happen.

Actually, no vehicle I've owned has the ability to run the driving lights plus the high beams. Not just a Toyota thing.

Installed 2440 lumen H11 amber bulbs in my driving light sockets to help with the fog...

You got that wrong, I mean fog lights without low or high beam!

In pure physics it make sense, since the steep angle (light source - driver view) helps to see thru the fog, the light out of the headlight on the other hand just brightened up the fog directly in front.

Yep. I commute every day up to Washington and back to Oregon. Fog is pretty much expected this time of year. Common sense is no longer common. :annoyed:

Random tip, polarized sunglasses for heavy rain and fog help you to see further. I have a pair of light tinted polarized ones I keep in the truck.

Agreed. And this sounds weird, but I swear I see better out the wet windshield with polarized glasses, too. It’s like the little droplets disappear instead of you looking through them. Hard to explain. But true, in my experience.

Also when at intersections with stop signs or even lights roll down your window and listen for traffic can’t count how many times I’ve done this and heard a vehicle before even seeing it in the fog...
