Smoked license plate covers

Anyone else have em? I'm worried I'll get pulled over, but want to keep the "blacked out" theme on my 4R. Any experiences? I live in Oregon, btw. Just curious...

 

I've gotten pulled for it back in the day on my blazer. I took it off. It's illegal in all 50 states.

 

Pretty sure its considered an "obstruction" so illegal.

I have one on my truck, the numbers are still clearly legible so hopefully it's not an issue.

 

Yeah, mine are visible as well. I just don't want to tempt officer friendly to pull me over. But guess I will live and learn...the hard way

I have one and have been pulled over in several states. I was pulled for speeding so they would just add it to the ticket. They normally will not just pull you for the cover. It is probable cause to be pulled over, so either don’t have one or drink too many ...sodas

I'm in Eugene. Yes I did get a ticket. Took pictures of them removed and it got dropped in court was a pain in the ass to have to go to court though.

They do look cool. I think some Pacific Wonderland plates would look badass on your 4runner.

 

I'm not sure if blue and yellow are the right colors. Maybe I will settle for a red plate frame. But I'll drive a bit with the covers and see the trouble I get into

 

Passed 2 coppers today. One was right behind me for about 1/4 of a mile. Didn't get pulled over, but maybe they weren't really desperate to meet quota...?

 

10 bucks says if it was dark out you would of got pulled over and asked if you had been drinking

Good thing is I rarely drive at night. But we'll see. I've also been looking at these frames:

Why is a frame illegal? We have had carbon fiber frames for years now & Nebraska is known for small things like this. This is the pic of the rear of our T4R.

 

Not the frame. A smoked plastic cover over the plate. It's harder to radar and also cameras have a harder time picking up the plates in pictures.

 

Frames aren't illegal. Covers are. And I have slightly tinted ones on my rig. I want the black out look all over. Stupid plates are bright white!!

 

My wife just got pulled over for a tag-light out. Those covers won’t fly around here. Although I have seen more and more with tinted front windows. They will get them sometime. Anyone getting precip? Just started sprinkling here and it was 80 degrees today......

I got stopped for speeding years ago in a vehicle that had a smoked gray license plate cover. The officer was cool (since I was cool) and instead of the speeding ticket, he gave me an equipment violation ticket and said simply show up at court with the cover in my hand and the ticket will get dismissed and I will pay only court cost. So...I did that. The officer told me that even perfectly clear license plate covers are illegal because if the sun hits them just right and causes a reflection, it can make the license plate unreadable. So.....having that cover saved me from getting a speeding ticket.

 

Maybe Washington is different, i've had them for the last 20 years and never been bothered about them. They are smoked but lightly so not too dark that is probably why

 

Overdue update: Took covers off about 16 months ago! Got pulled over turning into my work's parking lot in Washington (commute from Oregon). Officer just gave me a warning and told me to take em off when I got home. I obeyed...sadly.

But my boyfriend bought these for me as replacement! He drives a white Subaru that we call Betty White so of course my 4runner is Black Betty.

 

Ugh. Black Betty is Ugly Betty that needs a good wash!!!

 

Does Oregon have an alternate plate? Like the black plate you can get in California? A friend has it on his black truck, looks really nice.

 

No, unfortunately. Plus, the extra cost for custom plates is a bit ridiculous.
