    Hi All,

I know i am beating a dead horse, looking to get a cold air intake for my 5th gen runner. After all the research I am split between TRD CAI and AFE. Appreciate any input as to if one is better than other or any other recommendations. Thank you.

    Welcome!

Either way it's kind of a waste of money since it adds negligible gains in performance or mileage, (sounds cool though) so I suggest buying the one that costs the least amount of money.

    Welcome from Nebraska,
I got mine on the major 40% off last year.
That being said, I would buy the TRD again in case of issues. Toyota cannot say you used inferior parts!

Make sure you use one with a dry filter no k & n oil crap. They are noisemakers, wont improve performance

I would get TRD as you can buy all the parts separately for around 220

Please, explain why a washable air filter & a more free flowing intake should be pushed aside?
    It can pay for itself.
    It sounds better.
    It looks better.
If you were ever to add additional power adders you could definitely use the extra CFM.
I am not saying my TRD intake added any horsepower, it did allow for extra horsepower to be added more easily. Simple physics!
Not trying to argue. Just giving my side.

you can buy a reusable air filter for the stock intake. Not sure how it will otherwise pay for it’s $200-$500 self?

They don’t make a difference, but, it is my opinion and people are free to mod their vehicles to their desire! Me personally, I’d use that money to go on a trip.

Here’s how I feel about these so called cold air intakes.

the air is drawn in from inside the fender well. It’s outside the engine compartment so the air drawn in is already cooler that what could be drawn in from inside the engine bay.

TRD, AFE, etc all draw from the stock location and inside the fender well...unless I’m mistaken and they draw from the engine bay. but I don’t think they do.

let’s talk elements. So, stock filter or washable media, or oiled media? Days ago I used to be a fan of K&N until someone older and wiser pulled me aside and held my air filter up and to the light of the sun. All the little pinholes of light that shines through. Like the night sky on a moonless night. Then he held up a OE filter and it was like the clouds had moved in.

This made me realize. Those points of light were holes in the filter that allowed dirt and debris through and into your engine.

The cloudy sky OE filter caught a lot of the dirt and debris that would get past these oiled and washable filters.

Getting back to intakes. I have a ram air intake and I have seen absolutely zero performance or fuel mileage gains from it. It’s a snorkel and despite its location and the fact it faces oncoming air I haven’t seen one iota’s worth of gain.

Here is the fake news I posted the other day (baseline post #2, TRD CAI post #3), I believe this was an honest attempt at providing some real data, but people a lot smarter than me say it's bogus. I have one on my truck, but I have no proof of anything. It did make my truck a lot slower because it looks so cool, I can't bring myself to close the hood and actually drive it anywhere. I will say that with my Snorkel, the air filter stays a lot cleaner, but I have not done a "parts per million contamination test", so I can't prove that either.
