Add grease to front axle

I have a 2006 4Runner v8 4wd and just replaced the front driver's side axle. The axle I bought was a refurbished one. When squeezing the both the boots, I cannot feel any grease in there. My question is, is there a way to add grease into the boot area without taking the boot off? Thanks.

Yes you can, but you need to loosen a boot. The way I do it with my atv is to loosen the larger end, slip it off, and fill it with grease, then slip it back on and tighten the clamp. I have a tool specifically made to tighten the cv band clamps so it's easier, but it is possible with hand tools. If there's no grease I'd leave it parked until you fill it

 

Thanks wnelax04sr5. I will take a look at the clamps. From the looks of it, I may have to buy new clamps since the clamp does not look reusable. What type of grease do you use?

 

i usually get sent packets of cv grease when i buy new boots, which I'm doing quite often with an atv. a local auto parts store would probably have cv grease, just tell them your application and they will know what to give you

also, depending on what tool you use to slide the boot off, try to slide just one part off so the whole thing doesnt come off, and be careful not to puncture the boot

 

and fyi the whole boot is not packed with grease......
its there to contain the grease

 

what he said ^ if its truly ungreased and dry the bearings will need to be greased inside
