    Hi Everyone,

New guy here, well been reading on the forum but just signed up. I currently have a 2016 Taco but am thinking of trading it in and getting a 4runner. Looking at the new Venture addition. I plan on putting an Icon stage 2 lift. Since I am going to change the suspension is there any benefit of getting the KDSS system. My wife has a 2017 4Runner ORP with KDSS and I like the way it handles. Just not sure it will be needed with the Icon set up.

Thanks for any input and experience.

    Jimmy

I think it will depend on your use and how much lift you're going for.

With a smaller lift, you shouldn't have any trouble with the KDSS. And, you'll benefit from the reduced body roll on road and the extra suspension articulation off-road.

If you plan on significant lift, and hardcore off-roading, you might end up removing the sway bars anyway, so you'll be spending extra for something that you won't use.

What are your plans for the new 4runner?

Thanks for the reply. Looking for 2-3 inch lift, no hardcore off-roading just camping, beach driving and gun range / hunting. I want it to look good and handle well.

In that case, I wouldn't hesitate to get the kdss.

Enjoy whatever you choose! Post pictures here when you get it.

So agreed to a deal on a 2020 4Runner ORP. Now all they have to do is locate one without any dealer installed "upgrades". It's going to have KDSS, moon roof, and sliding cargo tray. So going back and forth on the lift the shop I contacted recommended a Bilstein kit since I won't be doing any hard core off-roading. They quoted $2850 for 6112s, 5160s, SPC UCAs, and springs to get a 2.5" of lift. That also includes the alignment. Seems kind of high to me, but I am definitely not an expert. What do you guys think?

That doesn't sound bad to me, if that's including labor. I think you'd spend around $2K to buy those parts, maybe a bit more. If the shop has a decent reputation, I wouldn't feel bad paying it.

I'm interested to hear other's feedback as well.

Unless I'm wrong isn't the Bilsteins and SPC's about $1200? $500 or so for install and couple 100 for alignment?

    Seems high to me.

I looked it up, and it looked like about $1500 for the bilsteins with lift coils for the rear. Not sure what the SPC's go for, but I was guessing around $500.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong websites.

To be fair, I didn't look at many different websites.

I’ve lifted two 4R’s with KDSS 3+ inches each and us no issues.

I ran Old Man Emu on both with love issues.

personally...I’d steer clear of icon and go King but that’s my personal preference and support of a good company as opposed to one I’d rather run rancho’s over

OP, do you have an itemized estimate from the place doing the work? You should be able to Google the parts and compare prices.

I would expect to pay slightly more for the parts than what you can buy them for online. It's normal for materials to be marked up a bit.

Which OME's are you running? I'm sort of interested in the BP51's, but a buddy of mine says that I might as well spend a little more and get Kings.

If budget doesn't allow that, I'll probably go with the standard OME set up.

I just want a good ride quality.

I’m running the nitro charger shocks and coils. No BP-51’s or remote resi’s. It’s a bit of a firm drive but I prefer it for the street manners and it hasn’t let me down off road or in the washboards. Plus, it killed any nose dive the 4R had.

    for $1100 I can’t complain.

I’ll never, ever run Icon. I would literally zip tie my suspension together and UCA’s to LCA’s before I put their shit on my rig.

Yeah, I was looking at a kit with UCA's for $1500-ish. I'm OK with firm. Part of me wants to keep it simple, but I really like the idea of internal bypass.

Is the issue with ICON based on quality, or customer service? I thought I had read about them being pretty shitty to deal with. It's too bad.. Their products look pretty good.

So the parts at 4wheel parts are as follows:

    Bilstein 5160 Series Reservoir Shock Absorber - $159.69 x 2 = $313.38
Bilstein B12 Coil Spring Suspension Kit $249.99
    Bilstein B8 6112 Suspension Leveling Kit $590.39
    SPC UCA's $630

    Total comes out to $1783.76

4Wheel doesn't carry the SPC's, they were found on Amazon.

So dealer called today, they found my truck and they are picking it up tonight. I will go after work tomorrow to get it. Next up once it's home is to order the Rays SCS wheels for it which luckily enough are in stock. Then see the lead time on getting the lift installed. I currently run Nitto's Terra on my Taco, was thinking Ridge on the 4R but want to research more tires. Besides KO2s what are you all running? I think for size I will go 285/70/17.

    Awesome!

    For tires; I'm running KO2's.

For your described use, a lot of people are running Falken Wildpeak AT3W's and seem to be happy with them.

I previously had Yokohama Geolander AT's, and they were good in most situations, and surprisingly good in snow. I would buy them again. I had Kumho Road Venture AT51's on my Tacoma, and was happy with them as well, aside from a bit of road noise.

I run Terra's on my Taco and like them, but read good things about the Ridge Grappler. Just want to check out other brands. My wife had KO2s on here Jeep before she got a 4Runner and I thought they were okat but a little slick in the rain. Maybe it was just the Jeep :).

Yeah was looking at the Wildpeaks, seems to get a lot of good reviews. I am also reading good things about the Coopers... So much research, LOL.

I believe @Ajmogen has Coopers on his Tacoma. He can probably give you some insight on those.

just did my lift in my garage with toytec aluma series, bfg ko2 285/70/17 and scs sr8 all together it was $3600. I have kdss. lift was pretty easy reattaching the kdss needs be done with the runner on the ground so the suspension can be weighed down. no more nose dive. no body roll on turns. love it. debating on uca right now I'm on stock uca and the alignment is horrible. debating on spc or jba. toytec lift was right around $1600 from toytec and $1000 each for the wheels and tires. I got the tires from tirerack. best price I could find free shipping. I do need advise on uca.

Let see some pics please. The shop I am going through recommends the SPC, says they have the most adjustment +/- 2 degrees.

Wow that's a great price. I wish I had the tools / lift to do my own. Unfortunately gave away a lot of tools, jack stands, and hydraulic jack when I moved to Florida. No basements here means everything has to be stored in the garage. Plus I am in an HOA so can't even have a shed. But as they say "happy wife, happy life" so I just have to have someone else do the major wrenching....
