What's the deal with everyone wanting TRD wheels??

Saw some on Amazon and they were over $200 each, for a 17x7 black rim.

Why do so many folks here view them as the holy grail in wheels? There are much better looking and much cheaper wheels available in better offsets and widths, yet everyone seems to want them.

    What am I missing?

Everyone wants to be a unique snowflake and modify their truck to stand out from all the other d-bags on the road.

But they all modify them in the same way.

I admit - being on this site, t4r.org, and TW, has steered me into doing some of the same shit. I had TRD wheels for a bit. Ultimately, though, they are not nearly as good as the OEM TE wheels, look welfare, and are too common to even be snowflake (the ideology, not the winter travel) rated.

"He wears the clothes of a dissenter, but there's a logo on his back"... or something...

Oh, OK... I thought maybe there was something technically special about them like forged from unicorn horn or something.

In my humble opinion there are many reasons for this trend..

1 - they're black (also avail in Grey)
2 - they are avail at the point of sale - at the dealer
3 - they are factory rims - people trust the factory
4 - for the true enthusiast - all of the above apply - AND THEY ARE LIGHT WEIGHT - relative to the aftermarket brands out there.
5 - I imagine there are many more reasons...

**additionally the FN version of the TRD wheels are a 1/2" wider (they may even be lighter) and are also very popular

Are they perfect? I don't know. Many people love them, in fact my buddy has them (along with the aforementioned scores of other people) and that's a big reason I went in another direction. In fact I went with BRONZE not black and I went with Icon, not SCS or Method or one of the other very popular brands. Now that said, I imagine my wheel will at some point be seen more and more, at which point I will likely make a change

If you like the trd rims, the FN Wheel version is the way to go.

When my plasti-dipped stock ones start flaking, I may try to paint them bronze with a black center cap to see how that looks.

I have them in grey and I have been thinking about picking up some trail takeoffs on Craigslist. The TRD wheels are a pain to clean and way to common, even grey. They are lighter than stock trail or sr5 wheels which is why I purchased them when I put on heavier tires.

My Limited came with 20’s. For like $650 I got a set of 4 brand new OEM wheels straight from the dealer that work perfectly. They are a good looking wheel that’s inexpensive, lightweight, they aren’t black, they don’t have fake bead locks, they utilize factory lugs so no spline drive bullshit or special tools, the hub bore is perfectly sized without the need for centering rings, they widen the track of the vehicle a bit, and they are the proper width and diameter for the tires I wanted to run.... pretty much a no brainer.

I'm not into these wheels. I like the Stealth Stock look.

https://www.revereoverland.com/4runner This link (this is not my 4runner but only something i found while doing research on lifts) is an example of what I want to do to my 4runner. Lifted, bigger tires, Wheels are stock.

I didn't like the stock SR5 wheels, and these were a great deal during the TRD Anniversary sale ($500 or so for the set). When I move on from them, I'll most likely be able to recoup my cost, too. Looks are subjective, but I like how they look, they're lightweight, and OEM.

    Yep, SR5 wheels are hideous.

I really like the trail wheels.

Not a fan of the Pro wheels. Too intricate of a pattern. Simpler is better, IMO.

That being said, the Pro wheels aren't the worst thing ever.

Black bedazzled wheels are the worst thing ever.

I was going to get SCS Ray 10's.

Then the 40% TRD sale happened and I couldn't pass up the deal at $129 each. I think a lot people own them because of the 40% sale.

If this 40% sale was to happen again, any guesses what month? Thanks
With rim's? I love the look of the pro rim's that's why I picked them. Had I known that cleaning them is a pain in the..... I would have went another route

Since the 40% off sale was on 4/4/19, the next sale should be the 50% off sale on 4/4/29.:)

I actually found the TRD Pro wheels to be easier to clean than my SR5 wheels with a wheel woolie.

The 40% of was in celebration of TRD'S 40th anniversary.
That was a once in a decade sale.
    I don't even see a 50 yr 50% off sale.
They sold out of everything & delivery to some (I included) took weeks. While others could do local pickup that day.
It was a great deal but Toyota wasn't ready for the demand.

I’ll agree, I’m not a fan of the stock 4runner wheels on any of the models. The SR5’s are the worst and the limiteds are just hideous. The Pro wheels are ok but I’m a fan of wider wheels.

I actually really liked the off-road wheels, but they looked weird after I installed the sliders.

The Pro wheels looked good to me, but they were expensive and becoming pretty common.

I had my eye on the Pro-Comp 05's back when I had my Tacoma, so that's what I went with.

My 17 Pro with the black wheels I don’t like the finish on them. To much of a pain in the ass to clean. But I don’t drive my Pro much. Has very low miles. If I do change my wheels down the road I will keep my Pro wheels and put on SCS which I had on my Tacoma. Those wheel are nice and also the finish on them much easier to clean.

I had them on my Tacoma also, I purchased them because I like the look, I know there a hundreds of wheel styles out there, I just didn’t see anything I liked. Now the bad, they are a bitch to clean, even with a good wheel brush. I have also had second thoughts about not keeping the OEM OR wheels. They are a good wheel with a thicker outer rim and a valve guard that I like, and I have seen a few lifted/off road tires T4Rs that I like the look.

They came with my truck... such a pain in the Ass to clean that matte finish. When the G2 tires are shot, I’ll sell them for sure and replace with the SCS Ray10s.

Yes it’s that matte finish that makes them so hard to clean. Had them on my 17 Pro and now my 2020 Pro. I might be soon having another set of SCS wheels for my Pro in black. And box up my Pro wheels. My black gloss wheels on my Z06 are much easier to clean than these. The SCS wheels are definitely easier to clean.

I ceramic coated mine when was a couple days old. Done that on my last few vehicles and wheels are always easy to clean
