Need Advice: 2010 4R SR5 185k miles 4wd

So I am thinking of getting a new(used) 4R for the wife ( she has a 97 2wd now). I found a 2010 4L, 4WD, for about 11.5-12K.

Issues is it has 185k miles? is that too much? how long do these engines last?

Has some rust as it was on the east coast, but so far the pictures don' look that bad...

Want to know your thoughts... don't want to buy something if it is o it's last leg...

I mean, if it's all you can find in your budget... then cool. Make it work.

I personally would not buy a 9 year old "some rust" truck with nearly 200k on it when there are way better examples to be found... but those way better examples are all probably $20k +.

To answer your engine lifespan question, service dept at dealer considers their lifespan to be 500k miles IF maintained.

 

I am weighing toward no now... but here are the pics... let me know your thoughts...

That’s not meaningful rust, almost new vehicles will have that. The metal looks pretty solid.

 

I asked for a picture of the rear trailing arm, as I have been reading that is where it fails. (combination of elements and heat form exhaust)


How would one treat this???? wire brush and a can of spray enamel?

on another note, how are the 4wd systems on these things? I know they don;t have the rear locker anymore, unless you get the trail edition...

 

Yep looks good. Wire wheel and POR15 it'll be fine.

 

I see some flaking in the pictures... is this an issue?

 

thank you for the reply..... man ... i really do want this truck... but dam MPG is killer, and i think i will need to change all fluids for sure....

OR, just keep chugging along in our 97 2wd...... my son isn't old enough yet for the snow...and we are in California... so ... do i REALLY need 4wd?




Would it be a waste of time to find a locker for the rear of my 2wd??? and just pre runner it?

do the dual VVTi engines have issues with Head gaskets? or did toyota fix this? when do timing chains need to be replaced?
