Does the engine need to be running to operate the compressor?
The compressor needs a constant 13.8 Volts for optimal performance, and that is only possible with the engine running.
What is duty-cycle?
It’s the maximum continuous run time of the compressor, expressed in % of 1 hour.
Is a direct-drive motor better than a gear-drive motor?
Direct-drive motors deliver power straight to the piston rod, it is quiet and reliable. Gear-driven motors have an extra layer of friction, creating a louder system that’s prone to rapid performance decline due to deteriorating gear teeth.

Portability:
It is nicely compact and comes with a high quality carrying bag that everything fits in nicely once properly coiled. It should be easy for anyone to find a space suitable for storing this entire kit.
Function:
The clips grip the battery terminals well, however they are a bit small. So you may have to be a bit strategic on how you attach to the battery terminals. It makes it super easy to attach the hose to the tire valve as it screws on to the threads securely. Once the hose is screwed on, just turn the compressor on and let it do its work. The hose and clip cables are adequately long to reach where they need.
Inflation ability:
I have used this compressor on trailer tires, UTV tires on my Polaris RZR, and even my RAM 1500 truck. It handled all 3 quickly and easily.
The only slight con I noticed was that the metal portion of the compressor gets quite hot pretty quickly. So you sometimes have to let it cool before packing it back into the bag. This is understandable considering how hard the unit works to quickly inflate.
This air compressor is a great product. It is probably better than what you may need. But as the saying goes, it never hurts to buy something better than what you need. You will never regret buying quality.
I keep this air compressor in the trunk of my Honda Accord. I chose this model because it has alligator clips that connect directly to the battery rather than the cigarette lighter socket. Now, my Honda has small tires, 205s. I suspect the smaller models, the kind that plugs into your car's cigarette lighter socket, will be powerful enough to inflate my tires. But I chose this model because I also have a sport-utility that has bigger tires. This air compressor is powerful enough to inflate large tires with ease. To get this level of performance, it is necessary for the compressor to have a powerful motor. This powerful motor draws a lot of current. More current than the typical lighter socket can provide. Enough to blow the fuse on a typical lighter socket. That is why the more power air compressors connect directly to the car battery with alligator clips.
Be careful when connecting this air compressor to your battery. Concentrate on the task. You do not want to mix up the polarity. Also, if your car has a small displacement four cylinder engine, your battery will be pretty wimpy. So keep your engine running while you operate the compressor, otherwise you might run down your small battery. All of this should tell you that this air compressor is not for everybody. These types of air compressors, the ones that connect directly to the battery terminals, are for those who know something about cars and batteries. You do not want to mix up the polarity when connecting. If you know nothing about cars, this compressor is not for you. In that case, get a smaller compressor that plugs to the cigarette lighter socket because you cannot mistake the polarity that way. It will be safer for somebody who is not a car person. But know that your socket driven air compressor is not going to inflate your tires as fast and as easily as this unit. There is always a trade off.
Speaking of trade offs, I chose this model over a competing model that has a coiled hose. This unit comes with an uncoiled hose. It is more flexible than the type that comes coiled like a spring. This unit, with its uncoiled air hose, is harder to store but it is easier to use during a stressful emergency situation. Yes, you will have to find a way to pack the hose neatly. But to me, it is better to put up with hassle while you're at your driveway packing the car rather than at the side of the road with a flat tire. So while the coiled variety packs easily and neatly, that coiled hose will fight you when you want to stretch it from the compressor to your tire. And that will happen at the most inconvenient time at the worst location. A model with a coiled hose is neater and packs better, so it is not necessarily a deal breaker. You just have to know your own situation. If you have a small vehicle and are short on space, sure, get a model with a springy, coiled hose. Just know the trade offs, because that springy coil will be harder for you when it comes time to actually use the compressor.
This unit comes in a nice box, but it does not come with a case. That should not be a deal breaker because it is easy to buy a cheap bag. Either keep it in its own box in your trunk or buy a small kit bag. I recommend that you keep all of the parts in one place because you do not want to be looking for parts during an emergency. Do what you can now to make sure that you do not add to your stress level during a road emergency.
Highly recommended. This is an excellent air compressor for those who know cars. The unit feels like it is of good quality and the performance is very good. The air hose is easy to use. The alligator clips are sturdy enough, though I would want them sturdier.
I bought the 88P on the strength of J. Schaeffer's outstanding comparison. I definitely wanted an inflator that connected across the battery, rather than in the lighter, cause why risk blowing out fuses and causing more grief.
Some specific points:
1. Reach. The 8 foot battery connector and 12-foot air line (total of 20 feet) are plenty. There is a complaint somewhere in here, that you can't get the control unit to the rear tires, but rather have to make the airline hookup, then walk a few steps back to the pump/pressure control unit. Then go back and unhook the air line. I don't find this a practical problem, but it is a fact.
2. Screw-on brass fitting versus clip-on. I prefer the brass screw-on fitting on the 88P over the clip on that I had before, even though that clip-on gave no problems. The brass screw-on goes on fast and is secure, and doesn't lose air. The clip-on never really felt secure and air-tight to me, plus made much hissing when installing and removing. I prefer the brass screw on hands down.
3. Noise and Power. The 88P is quiet, but powerful. It will top up tires in seconds. You're not sitting there listening to a racket, and watching the pressure needle not move. The 88P moves the needle, and right now, and it's quiet. I didn't find it an annoyance to turn the unit off momentarily to get my pressure reading. You just press the little rocker switch 'on' or 'off'--it's right there under your finger.
4. Battery clamps. There is a complaint somewhere in here, that the battery clamps are small. The clamps are sturdily made, but it is true that they won't span the entire battery post-with-leads, the way a jumper cable will. This is a non-problem. The clamps are sturdy and have enough bite to stay on. Clamp them to a nut or bolt head, or to one of the battery leads. It's just not an issue.
It's nice to be able to buy something that absolutely solves a problem in your life, and you can check that one off 'Done'. I highly recommend this unit.
Top reviews from other countries
After opening I was correct about that, the majority of the pump and all the working parts were constructed with metal, unit feels solid and quality built. Compact design for easy storage in your vehicle or trailer with very generous length of hose and power cables for reaching tires.
Power cord comes with alligator clips to attach directly to vehicle battery, because of the amp draw cigarette plug in would not be a good option either blowing the fuse or melting electrical wires in car and possibly causing a fire. Cord has its own replaceable fuse for safety.
You can read the details in product description for all the specs and accessories this compressor comes with.
The ONE DIFFERENCE THAT I NOTICED COMPARED TO OTHERS REVIEWS IS THE COMPRESSOR DOES COME WITH A STORAGE BAG!! Once again this DOES COME WITH A STORAGE BAG.
It makes short work of inflating tires and is much quieter than most other cheap compressors I have used in the past. I only just started using the item and can not speak about long life but just from the build quality and few uses I have used it I can tell if not abused this compressor will last you years and years with reliable inflating.
Only small complaint would be, although it comes with a store away bag, as others have mentioned it is a bit small making packing it up a bit challenging but doable.
It is definitely worth the extra bit of money for the quality of the item and probably will be cheaper in the long run when buying replacement cheap compressors over and over. I would recommend anyone looking for a compressor to keep in their vehicle or RV to purchase this one or one of the other VIAIR products.
I honestly couldn't estimate how many hundreds of hours of relentless pumping it did over the years. It worked flawlessly in the heat, sand, dust, mud, driving rain, snow and ice, and it survived living in the back of various 110 Defenders for nearly two decades.
Anyway it eventually died and I replaced it with a cheap standard domestic type one from by a known brand which was basically tat. I got 2 months use out of it tending to both my wife's car and mine (which has a slow puncture due to a slightly bent rim). It was slow, insanely loud and broke after maybe 10-15 uses.
I treated myself to a new Viair compressor as a replacement. It's more or less the same as the one I had before but a newer model. It's quieter, seems quicker and it's shiny! I expect it to last a similar length of time. If you are considering buying a home compressor - get a Viair. They really are worth the bit extra you pay for a quality product.
I have added a quick connect to the screw on nozzle that allows me to do all 4 tires quick without having to worry about cross threading.
The bag provided is bit too small and is likely to bend the air hose into a bad acute angle, so I recommend that you get our own larger bag to store the compressor
