There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I did have to disassemble it to get the key cut. I followed notes from an earlier reviewer. 1. flip out key. 2. pull back panel off exposing where battery is. 3. Unscrew 2 screws in there, and one under the sticker. 3. Pull key halves apart taking note of the spring and fact that its rotated under tension. Then used a small flat screwdriver to drive the pin out that holds the key blank to the 'elbow' piece. Had hardware store cut the blank. Then reassemble making sure to rotate the rear case about 270 degrees before pressing back together to tension the spring. I suppose you could potentially get the little pin driven out that holds the key blank without disassembling the remote, but would have to keep that key like half-way rotated out to do so - Id try that if I were to do it over again.
To the user by the name of Jp, why wouldn't the keys be able to get cut? Any locksmith should be able to. If they can't, don't go back to that locksmith and find yourself another locksmith. When I say locksmith, I'm not referring to home depot or lowes either.. an actual locksmith!
Key and remote programmed perfectly fine. Its built pretty sturdy. I don't see it breaking from few accidental drops. I also do like the fact that the area where you can attach it to your keys ring is solid and not weak and thin like some OEM remotes. Other than that... it's a bit cheaper on ebay for this particular remote but I guess the benefit from buying on amazon is prime (if you have it) 1 day shipping. All in all, it was a good buy.
*1: Insert master key into the key cylinder.
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK → ON position 5 times within 15 seconds.
*2: Open → Close the driver’s door 6 times within 20 seconds after completion of the previous operation.
*3: Remove the master key from the ignition switch and insert another key to be registered in the key cylinder
within 10 seconds after completion of the previous operation.
*4: Turn the ignition switch to ON position and wait for 60 seconds or more. The key registration will be completed.
*5: Ten seconds or more elapses after removal of the key or Open → Close the driver’s door, key registration
completed.
*6: When registering multiple keys, insert the key to be registered in the key cylinder
Do all of the steps QUICKLY!
Great buy for me.
What you need, and probably where others have failed, is the master key. The Toyota OEM one that came with your 4Runner is black, and this is also the one able to lock/unlock the glove compartment (mine has difficulty doing this, but works after fiddling with it). The valet key is gray and will not work to program a new key, nor will it open the glove compartment. If all you have is an aftermarket key (one without the Toyota logo) there's no guarantee that it was programed as a master key, so it may not work for you, so you'd have to get the dealer to make a new one.
Getting the key cut is the easiest part, however you may need to remove the key from the remote to get this done. To remove it, flip the key out, and then pry on the back cover from where the key folds in. This will pop off the back cover, and this is also where you can replace the battery. To separate the case, there's two screws near where the key chain connects, as well as one hidden under the sticker on the back that you'll have to remove. After this, you can pull it apart. Be mindful of the spring inside the pivot of the key. Pay attention to how this assembles; you'll notice the spring is twisted 360 degrees while assembled to put tension on it and help give a strong flip when you deploy the key, so be sure to do this as well when reassembling it.
That's all I got; hopefully these instructions help people get these properly set up, as it 100% does work, you just need to be patient, prepared with all the info to do it, and pay attention every step.
