A butane refill seems to last quite awhile, it heats to soldering temp VERY quickly (seconds), and has a cover so it can be put back into it's travel case without taking to time to let it cool down first.
Extremely handy to use when there is no electrical outlet handy... in fact, I use this Weller P2KC gas iron to actually *replace* my electric 120VAC iron in everyday use (although I keep it as a backup). Take care of the tip (keep it tinned, and tin the tip before you turn it off) and it will last almost forever.
The only thing that you have to remember, that makes using this iron different than an electric iron, is that since it burns a gas (butane), that means that is also has to exhaust that hot, burnt gas, and it does a short distance from the soldering tip. The exhaust port is small, and it exhausts the hot gas in one direction only, so make sure that the exhaust hole DOES NOT point toward something close by that is heat-sensitive, such as plastic, paper-- or your skin! It will burn you if you're not careful. Just be mindful of where the tiny exhaust hole is, and you'll be fine; it's the price we pay for the portability we get using any gas-powered iron.
Very highly recommended. I only nicked it one rating star because the temperature control is an adjustment knob at the back end of the iron, and the temp you get is just a guess; you'll have to play with it to find the best temperature that works for your needs.
This Weller P2KC butane soldering iron is one of the few products I can easily give 4.5 - 5 stars.
If either of mine break, I'll replace it with same, in a heartbeat.
This kit has lasted me over 5 years and still going strong. Use it 3 days a week for 15 min.
I initially planned on just getting one of those cheapo Radioshack butane soldering kits for the odd occasions that I need to solder wiring in my car, but was talked into this one by one of my cousins, who owns and uses an older version.
I was initially hesitant because of the price, but I'm really happy I bought it.
This is an exceedingly nice, well-thought-out kit. I really love the fact that it comes with a stand for the iron that clips into the case. Whats really nice is that- due to the way its angled- you can either put the iron in from the top, angled down (for soldering) or from the bottom angled up. (for when you want to heat/torch things without having to hold the tool in your hand)
I also really like the fact that they give you a separate spot for the cover, so that you can store the tool with it on OR off.
I initially thought I wouldn't use the hot knife, but its very useful for cutting nylon rope, as it both cuts and fuses at the same time giving you nice neat rope ends.
The torch and the hot air tip are both very useful.
I really like that it comes with a sponge for soldering.
The butane lasts a LONG time- at least an hour. I really don't need to refill it that often, and I use it very, very often.
However, note:
If you don't already have a good soldering iron, and don't have an urgent need for in-the-field soldering, get yourself a good Weller soldering station first.
The iron in this kit perfectly useful, mind you, but if I could do the work at my bench with my electric soldering station, I would do so every time.
With butane, you always have to be mindful of the jet of heat shooting out of the exhaust port. That is the nature of all butane irons (that I know of), however. Just know what you're getting into, and you will be extremely satisfied.
Would I buy this again? Yes, many times over.
This seems pretty good. I've had it flare out now and again, but it always lights right back up again. This model seems relatively well made, so I'd recommend using it if you are doing inexact soldering work in places where traditional soldering irons just won't work.
A must for anyone who works on the go.
Starts easily and keeps a good hot temp.
I've used cheaper tools and always come back to the Weller because it just plain works...

Overall I recommend this item.
Still I’d rather replace the tips than the unit itself which speaks volumes of this iron. Ignites instantly, you can solder within seconds, it’s very sturdy and compacts, takes very little gas yet lasts for ages, I hardly have to fill it up. 5 stars if it had better tips.
