Product Description
Adding this B&M SuperCooler keeps the ATF and transmission cooler, and keeping a vehicle's transmission cool is essential for dependability, especially in performance applications. The unit is designed to be very efficient for its size and weight, to cool much better than an ordinary 'fin and tube' cooler, and to reduce the risk of lube system failure. Using fluxless, oven brazed construction for vibration resistance, it is built out of lightweight aluminum alloy and features a revolutionary 'stacked plate' design with multiple oil flow paths. The unit monitors resistance to flow by allowing a controlled amount of ATF to pass through a self-regulating orifice. Controlled by viscosity, thicker ATF is returned directly to lube through two bypass openings in the stacked plate core, while thinner ATF is directed through the core to cool as operating temperatures increase.

Customers like the performance of the ice chest. They say it works great in summer, it really lowered their temps in their transmission, and it's easy to install. They also appreciate the built-in bypass it has for cold temperatures, and say it provides piece of mind in colder climates against cold lube failure.

Installing was fairly straight forward. I have mine going into the radiator first and comes out and ran to the cooler then back to transmission. This set-up has worked great and have used this for the past few months even pushing the engine into OD at times where flat and I see the trans temp drop down as the transmission runs slower locked in OD for testing only, I don't normally run in OD towing due to potential issues lugging or slipping out of OD for long term health of transmission.
I would recomend on any vehicle where transmissions are known weak point and lots of city driving as well due to the more surface area to help keep the transmission cool. At highway speed plenty of airflow for most vehicles not towing but city driving is hard with minimal air running over radiators.
Here's what I do. This cooler is rated for 14,000BTUs and works great for engine oil even though it's rated for trannys and has bypasses for thicker viscosity fluid. Because of the high temps here and the Ford specified light grade oil, 5w/20w (I use 10w/30w Castrol Full Synth), its thin enough, especially when hot, to fully pass through this cooler especially since the adapter I use opens only at 180°+. It would probably work ok in northern climes too because until the oil is hot/viscous enough it won't even be sent to the cooler. So it would still work for those who need one in the summertime when it gets hot enough. The only change I make is I use the much better reinforced hose rated for all fluids, including hydraulic, that you can buy at any auto store because the B&M 70264 doesn't come with enough for an oil cooling job so you have buy some hose anyway. Might as well do it right and spend a little more because you sure as heck don't want an oil line failing.
I strap both coolers (separate tranny cooler) on the front side of the cross-member in the front cap right behind the grill opening and about 6" in front of the condenser/radiator. I never sandwich it to the condenser as it will transfer the heat into it. I don't bother with the mounting hardware. I use heavy duty zip ties instead because they hold forever but I can easily cut it loose to re-position, etc. and it only takes about 30 minutes to install from start to finish.
I change my oil/filter every 5,000 miles and it's viscosity is as good as new. It stays clear for the first thousand or so. I'm convinced I get better performance out of the motor and I know I get more life out of it. Down here keeping the motor/tranny cool and lubed is crucial to engine longevity and I've proven it over and over. I will get 300K-400K miles out of my '05.
**Note: The oil filter sandwich adaptor I use is the Derale 15702 Thermostatic because it has the 22 x 1.5mm filter mount adaptor for the Ford 4.6L and is thin enough to allow removal of the oil filter in its cramped, side-mounted design but thick enough so the hose bibs are clear. The only positioning that will work is by pointing the hose bibs to 7 o'clock (looking straight on at filter mount) but luckily, they're pointing forward and slightly down which is perfect for running the hoses up the fender well and around the side of the radiator.
