Suspension system components are susceptible to damage and wear due to normal use and driving hazards like poor road conditions, potholes and accidents. If a part fails, the effects can range from the mild (like premature tire wear) to the extreme (a total loss of control of your vehicle). Be on the lookout for these signs of a failing part in the suspension system:
|
|
|
|
---|---|---|---|
Vehicle pulling to the left or right?A failing suspension component can cause your vehicle to pull to the left or right which makes it difficult to control your vehicle. |
Front end shimmyLoose suspension system components can contribute to front end shimmy. You may feel vibration through the seat, steering wheel or brake pedal. |
Uneven or premature tire wearExcessive inner tire wear is a sign that there could be something wrong with a suspension part. |
Clunking, grinding or noise under vehicleAbnormal noises like squealing while turning corners or clunking from the front end can be an indication of a damaged part in the suspension system. |

Update: I decided that these springs were too stiff compared to my front OME bars. So I bought the OME medium rear springs in hopes of matching the fronts. The OME springs raised the rear about 2" above stock height and are not as stiff. The ride is more balanced front to rear now. As for the moogs they are still a good spring. I would recommend them for people that want to restore their 4runner to stock height and want a firmer ride for loads or aggressive on road driving. Matched with a firmer front torsion bar you can make your 4runner handle better on the street. However, if you want to raise your 4runner above stock height, without other modifications, for improved off road driving and a slightly firmer ride then get the OME medium.
I took before and after measurements and I gained 1" exactly from the ground to bottom of receiver hitch and a bit over 3/4" in the rear wheel well. My 4runner looks level now and the ride is restored.
edit: regarding the June 30th review above. These do restore the STOCK rear height. From factory the front wheelwells are taller than the rear giving the appearance ride is not level. These springs do exactly as advertised and restore to level ride. You have to know where to measure to see ride is actually level, you can't measure ground to top of wheelwell and use that as your reason front is "higher"
Side by side, the factory springs sit about a half of an inch taller than the new Moogs, but it’s clear that the construction is more heavy duty. Installation took about 30 minutes with a jack, jack stands, and pneumatic tools. Once in place, the rear end was raised about 1.5 inches, which is really where it should have been anyway. These don’t lift your truck, they just restore the factory ride height.
With three kids and a bunch of snow gear in the back, I only experienced about an in of sag which is a great improvement over the factory springs. I can’t speak to longevity because they’ve been installed for 24 hours at this point, but initial indication is that they are quality.
That being said, I also installed them on a 4runner, a 1991 4x4 model. My 4runner had the typical rear end sag and these springs corrected that. Installation was fairly straightforward. I installed them in conjunction with a pair of bilstein rear shocks, also purchased here on amazon and they firmed up the ride noticeably. I'd prefer the old sensatrac softer shocks for commuting but the bilsteins work much better offroad.
I had planned on installing some air bags inside the old springs but at $100 and over, I felt new springs would be a better value and am happy with how the 4runner rides now.
