Next I followed the instructions online for programming the key which is a sequence of steps involving closing and opening the door and inserting and removing the key. You can find these instructions all over the Internet. However, on my 2010 model RAV4, that programming method would only enable the door open and close buttons, but it does not activate the immobilizer chip which allows you to start the engine. I found other sequences of inserting the key five times and opening the door six times, but that does not work on this car.
What I found is that people with later Toyota models are using the Toyota Techstream software on a Windows laptop and a Mini VCI cable to connect to the car through the easily accessible OBD2 port. Once I got everything hooked up following instructions on YouTube and in forums, I was able to get into Techstream’s key programming for the immobilizer. Within a few minutes I was able to program both keys, and they work beautifully.
Many people who have bought these keys are having the dealership or a locksmith program them, but you can totally do it yourself with a little research. I’m very happy with the end result of my purchase.
I bought these and was going to have them cut and then program them myself but decided to have the locksmith do all the work for $25 each. I use the new ones and keep the original as a spare.
I am beyond thrilled with these keys and how simple they were to program! (Read further to see how I got them cut after being told it couldn't be done). After watching the video that was supplied through a link sent with the package, I took a screenshot of the directions and had both programmed in 6 minutes. It only took that long because I lost my place in the directions the first time and had to start over. If you have trouble reading or remembering, I'd recommend having someone else read them a
to you as you go, because there are a series of silly things you have to do in the right order and number of times.
The only problem we've had with the keys is we have to push the button 3 times instead of 2 to unlock the back door, and that's not a big deal at all.
So, 2 keys for my son's used 2006 Toyota RAV broke within a couple of weeks, the one with the chip completely fell apart and the chip was lost (the other key's chip was already gone). Ace Hardware wasn't selling and programming keys because of Covid-19, the closest dealership was an hour away, and I was concerned the last key would break. So I took a chance and ordered these. After reading reviews I was prepared when I went to have them cut at Home Depot and was told they can't do that, but she said they literally can't physically do it because they don't have a blank(?). Fortunately another employee noticed we we were having a problem and came to help - then told me they don't cut these kind of keys because they won't work. I told him "I understand they won't start the car, but I would REALLY appreciate it if you would cut them for me because if ALL they do is unlock the door I'll be happy because at least I'll have a spare the next time my son locks his key in the car- and if they don't work, I won't blame you". So, if I remember right, this is what he did to cut it - he took the working key and put it in the machine to read the key, then picked the blank the machine recommended and put it in the machine, programed it to cut that blank, pulled the blank out and replaced it with mine and hit start. It worked! I then took them home and programmed them to the car!
I honestly don't understand why these places charge so much to program keys when it's so simple and fast to do.

t works great after a simple at-home programming. The seal seems good, all buttons work, and it fits perfectly inside an original key.
Can't speak to the quality of the key used to start the engine, as I had no need to get this one cut.
