    Luckily I live in Hawaii.

Just renew and get said gold Star. (But they do ask for a crazy amount of documentation just to renew)

So we are used to it.

Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. States have made considerable progress in meeting this key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission and every state has a more secure driver's license today than before the passage of the Act.

I got mine a few months ago, was a pita providing all of documentation. From what I understand as of sometime in 2020 airline travel will be difficult at best without it or a passport.

Once implemented you won't be flying a commercial US flight, buying a gun, or doing anything else that requires display of ID to/ for a federal agency if you don't have REAL ID.

PITA but it's the world we live in.

    Mark,

Would you have a link to the "buying a gun" part of as I have yet to see that or I could have missed it on everything I have read.

Is there State adoptions in the law we don't know about has the DMV not been so forthcoming about the change? are the qualifications for licensure and must provide satisfactory proof of identity?

Is this a California law making things more difficult to buy a gun?

I still find it interesting that you need an ID to do almost everything these days. From applying to a job, to renting equipment, to driving, to buy alcohol, getting SSA benefits, and flying.

Except, of course, to vote in elections.

I don't have a link, but here in Calif the REAL ID thing was poorly publicized by the DMV. People going in to the DMV to renew their driver licenses were being default issued the other ID - not sure what it's called - that basically designates the bearer as "citizenship unverified".

A guy I work with renewed his DL, got the non REAL ID because he didn't know, and went to buy a gun with it some weeks later. Rejected... even though the store knew him. He tried to present a passport after they explained the issue to him and they couldn't accept that, either.

From my understanding, once you get the "unverified" / non REAL ID, you're screwed for everything for which citizenship is required.

He had to go get the REAL ID to resolve the issue.

In Calif, if the ID says " Federal Limits Apply", it means the citizenship of the bearer is unverified. If there is a golden bear in place of those words then citizenship is verified.

Yep! I just went and looked at the Cali law to see that it is State adopted law on this issue of Real ID. Va is trying this as well but it didn't pass the State legislature last yr. DMV here was clueless as well as they are scrambling now to catch up because they waited do to our last Gov "Richard McAuliffe.

Thanks for clarifying with the info maybe it will help some others here to get a move on!

Call any Gun shop and they will explain it better than anyone else. They are in the business of selling so they have full details.

Real ID also applies to ammo purchases in Cali

I find it more amazing people don't have their personal documentation readily available.

Having a passport makes the process easier. I personally do not know if anyone has gone thru the process without one.

Cheap Hawaii Vacations right after the deadline? Less tourists to deal with taking pictures of everything including their food . Would be nice since many will not have done this causing a small window of opportunity

I need to do this, and update my license anyway (moved 3 years ago...), but they want papers, so... when work slows down I'll get on it, I promise

I have all of mine in order its just the process that sucks here in Va its anywhere from 4-6 hr wait times....They have opened the DMV offices on Saturdays now to try and move it along, but VA waited so long to implement the program do to privacy law challenges.

at last count VA has had only 600K apply out of 6.3 million

Same here you gotta be the early bird and get in line. Its been a requirement just to get/renew our license for a while now I don't understand the problem.

Yes, Texas has been doing it for a while with their driver licences... I have my gold star in the top right of my licence.
