How do we feel about this? Especially the first oil change.

I have never felt comfortable with it on any vehicle, but since I bought the vehicle service plan, I’m now stuck with 10k intervals.

Did my first one on the 4Runner at 6000. Second at 13,000. Third at 23,000.

I have no mechanical reason for doing the first two early. I did them because I had time and the weather was nice. I have to work on mine outside...no room in the garage. I won't go over 10k and I never want to be stuck needing an oil change in the winter.

First oil change at 1000. Second one at 5000 and my next will be at 10,000

Overkill? Nope. It’s going to be my grocery getter for a long long time. Fresh oil never hurt anything.

Coming from VW/Audi, I'm amazed at how inexpensive the oil and oem filters are for these rigs.

Going to do my 1st oil change at 6k, 2nd at 13k, 3rd at 21k, 4th at 30k, and the rest at 10k intervals. The first few at reduced intervals are probably overkill but it's only costing me @ $28 to do one additional change over the first 30k miles. Used oil analyses on these rigs show the oil can usually go 12k miles no problem unless you have lots of short trips, lots of towing and/or offroading on dusty roads, etc.

Every 5k. Maybe overkill but I tow a boat often.

From what I read, the first one should be early due to engine break in. After that 10k is well established if you arent towing or "dusty conditions".

First one at 2500. Second one at 5000.....then every 5k moving forward. Oil changes are CHEAP and easy to do. There's absolutely no way in hell I'm going to put my rig in the hands of the dealership oil change monkey. Toyota could offer me free oil changes for life and I'd decline the offer!

Based on my experiences I find nothing wrong with going 10k on any quality rated synthetic oil. I try to do as many oil changes I can without doing to the dealership. The first oil change I did on my 4Runner came out super clean after 10k as well as my wife’s Highlander. I believe manufacturing processes have really minimized all those particles getting in the engine and generally Toyota’s are very easy on oil. I did 10k changes on my 3.4 and 4.0 Tacoma’s without issue. I tow lighter loads but for long periods of time in hilly terrain. Check out Tacomaworld...there is a guy that did 300k on 10k oil changed using 5w30 Mobil 1 EP and it seemed like he drove Offroad a lot. Fluids will always need to be changed but the technology is far more advanced it was 10 15 years ago...

Let me just say thank you to all of you who are changing your oil at 2 - 5,000 miles intervals.

I own stock in some oil companies and you continue to provide me with some nice returns.

I also save money by doing oil changes at 10,000 miles, like the Toyota manual recommends.

That’s not overkill, if you read the manual that qualifies for severe duty and 5,000 mile oil change intervals.

Shameless plug since this is an oil interval argument.

I will be putting this oil and filter on mine next week. I have 1500 miles currently and will be driving 5300 miles over 16 days. I will send the factory oil in for analysis and then I will also send the AMSOIL in after my trip. I will create a thread for it and hopefully quell some heated discussion over fact vs opinion.

All good. To be honest, im not active enough to make any money. I think I have only made about $150 in the last 4 years. Im in it for the discount and good oil.

Oil and filter changes are THE lowest cost maintenance you can do to extend engine life. Change more frequently if dusty or heavy duty work
    loads like pulling trailers etc....

Don't waste your money on the amsoil crap. I use whatever synthetic is on sale and it will protect my vehicle just fine. Walmart supertech, mobil 1 when they have a rebate brand doesn't matter at all.

My favorite thing recently was how AmazonBasics Full Synthetic beat Mobil 1 in an oil test.

All brands were very close, but this has to irk the Mobil 1 fanbois.

The original plain Jane Mobil 1 prior to the Castrol lawsuit was pretty damn good and probably the best at the time. But now they are kinda of a living legend... They still have and excellent products but so do many other oil manufacturers. I used the Mobil AFE 0w20 in my 5th gen and it was noticeably noisier. I prefer the EP versions (quieter than the AFE versions in both the Taco and 4R 4.0) but I really have been liking the Toyota oil when I can get it cheap. I agree that it really doesn’t matter what oil you use. The likelihood of an engine failure due to oil brand or the maximum factory recommended interval is got to be extremely rare. I used Amsoil in the past but simply could not justify the cost and it was not certified (the Signature Series).

    This is good advice.

I work for a company that makes some additives for a major oil company.

They offered an oil seminar to employees of my company so we could learn about what our products do to enhance their products.

The people giving the seminar were super sciency oil nerds that actually work in the labs and do testing and make the oil.

At one point I flat out asked them if using the generic oil off the shelf at store XYZ was a bad idea. They told me that any oil on the shelf that is labeled with all of the applicable approval seals (i.e. ilsac) and meets the specs for your engine (i.e. 0W20) is more than adequate for use.

That being said, some oils have additives that do make them better. But, there is no need for "fancy oil". You're engine won't blow up from using the cheap stuff.

I also asked them about gasoline. They did 100% recommend using Top Tier gas. They gave me examples of bad things happening to engines on crappy gas from some supermarket chains and the likes.

Don't understand the hate being thrown by some at Amsoil since it is just as legit of an oil as any oil that meets the specifications. I use Amsoil OE or Toyota. I have been changing it every 5000 miles due to severe service until this last one where I put the Amsoil in. It's due now for another change at almost 10000 miles since my last change. I ordered an oil analysis kit and will post the results after I get them back in six weeks.
