No crank, no start, no clicking

I have a 2006 4runner Sport V8, yesterday when starting it the motor sounded like it was almost choking and if i revved up the motor it would choke out and quit. After that it started a few time with no problem but every time I gave it some throttle it would do the same thing. After a few times of doing this it wouldn't start anymore? Turn the Key and no crank, no clicking, no start. I found if I waited until morning it started again but would do the same thing, chock out and not crank. The battery is completely charged, the starter works fine (jumped the STA relay and it started). I have checked all the relays that I could think of and nothing. So I thought it may be a bad ignition switch so I replaced that, still does the same thing. There is no codes either, so no direction to move in.

Anyone have any ideas, I am out of them. Thank you so much!

 

Did you recently drive through deep water? Had this happen to me after a water crossing and read lots of peoples accounts of it. Some were "fixed" by replacing ECM, others by starter/solenoid, others by alternator/fuse, and lastly I just cleaned all battery connections and kickpanel connectors and let everything dry out.

Any codes? Sounds like it is flooding engine.

Change the engine air filter too. Change the plugs too.

BAD fuel pump would cause those issues. I believe the fuel filter is inside the fuel tank and not a maintenance issue.

Find a good mechanic to diagnose the issue.

 

How old is the battery, have you tested the voltage? It can be slightly low and not start. Ask me how I know.

Also if you jumped the starter relay and it started, it could be the relay.

 

As a matter of fact My Boy did go through some large puddles of water, I saw that the motor had dirty water splashed all over maybe a month ago. How would the ECM get wet when its inside the vehicle? I don't think it is the starter/solenoid because i can start the car anytime by jumping the STA relay. And i don't think it could be a fuse due to the fact that if I wait 2-3 hrs it will start, but as soon as i give it gas it chokes out and dies and will not crank again until I wait about 4 hours.

Thanks Benny123, Battery is only about 6 months old, tested and still good. I also have checked all the relays as well as swap them out with a new one, same thing happens, it cranks hard starts and as soon as i give it gas it chokes out and dies and will not crank again for about 4 hrs.

 

I had a GMC Jimmy with the "spider injector system", and it would hardly start. It was 12 years old. GM said I needed a whole "spider/carb/injector unit" for $1000 so I sold the car.

Jimmy would start cold - but if you turned it off, would not start again. Car became a worthless headache.

Might have a bad injector or even coil / sparkplugs need changing.

Your 4 runner starter sounds like it has issues. Shouldn't have to jump the solenoid to start. I replaced three starters on my 2005 V6 4 runner. OEM went after 5 years. Rebuilt that OEM starter at professional shop lasted one year. NEXT: New AM starter lasted 4 years. Got a Quality Built starter with lifetime warrantee in there now, and an $85 AM backup starter from Amazon.

AM starters are as good a OEM starters for the 4 runners IMO, and cost under $100. In the V6 they are easy to install. I had my mechanic do it in my driveway for $60. Took 15 minutes.

 

Thank you captsolo, these are all legit comments. I have not jumped the starter through the solenoid but through the fuse block (STA) that was to prove it isn't my starter. The other point is when i wait 4+ hrs and I am able to start it with the key, and it dies after i give it throttle tells me it couldn't be the starter but something else. I need to find out why it is choking out when i do get it started (BTW it will idle forever, only when I give it some gas does it die) but what is causing the delay to try and start again? It really seems like a relay but I have checked everyone of them, unless I missed one somewhere. Thanks for all the ideas, I am out of them, I am hoping its not the ECM. I have never seen something like this before??

Start it again and let it idle for an hour to dry anything out that needs drying.

I would start throwing parts it. Battery, starter, mass airflow sensor, keep going until it’s fixed. Don’t second guess yourself or any input from this thread. Just do it.

Check the spark plugs.

I power washed a Honda civic engine bay many years ago. water built up on top of one of the spark plugs. compressed air fixed it. also the speedometer stopped working....i ended up unplugging the harness connector at the transmission and blowing it out with a can of air. I know i am talking about a Honda civic but something similar may have happened to you.

It's not that the ECM gets wet, it's that connectors fill with water and short out pin to pin frying some circuits in the ECM. I don't think this actually happens cause the kick panel connectors that are most likely to get wet are for body control module no the engine. Odd that it's not logging any fault codes.

 

Correct no codes, strange to me also. Do you think the mass air flow sensor could be the issue if it got wet? I know the intake didn't take water but the outside of the sensor most likely was sprayed with water.

 

Just a guess but a weak or failing fuel pump would cause those stalling no acceleration.

Find a good mechanic.

 

Captsolo, I think you may be right about the fuel pump. "when" i can get it to start it will idle for a little while then choke out. See image I attached, I noticed when it (not sure what its called, image of top rear of motor) was sideways it ran fine, then it would turn up straight and choke out. I am guessing it isn't getting fuel? Or I just don't know what I am talking about. thanks,

Could be a fuel filter, but I'm only guessing.

Take it to a good mechanic. Even a Toyota dealer. Don't throw parts at it.

My 2005 V6 4runner has never done what yours is doing - ever.
It just starts up and runs like it did when it was new in 2005.
