Opinions on the FTAWD Vs the 2wd/4wd systems...

    Looking to buy a 04/09 4R. Most seem to be the FTAWD. I would prefer the 2wd/4wd for the generally better MPG and lower complexity and parts wear.

    Is there any durability/strength loss between either system? Are there lockable hubs, like other trucks, that are available?

    The 4th gen. 4R-4WD has FT4WD (full time) with a low setting, full time 4WD and RWD but no locking hubs. There are no "significant" gains or losses between full time 4WD and 2WDR. Gas mileage difference is barely noticeable. Reason says that there will be more wear on those components associated with 2WDR if the car is used more in 2WDR than in 4WD. In other words, if you never use the FT/PT4WD, all of the load, friction and heat will be seen in the 2 WDR components so, at the end, you will have a 4R with pristine 4WD components and a worn out 2WD system. I use PT4WD every time I drive on paved mountains roads, rain, gravel, dirt, mud and snow for a combination of about 35% FT4WD, 65% 2WDR and a very small % of PT4WD/L. Hope this helps.

    Mistake: Part time has the low setting. Full time is for roads. Sorry about that!

    BOSS lift and airbags
    Don't be concerned about the reliability of the fulltime 4WD, it's a proven system. The front differential is always going but those are stout units. If you can, inspect the front diff and driveshaft.

    Just make sure when you test drive one that 4LO engages and the CDL engages.
