Does Lug Nut Length Matter?

So I have some aftermarket wheels I will be installing soon and I was just wondering if I needed new lugs? I noticed that lots of aftermarket lugs are longer than stock lugs. Does length matter so long as the thread pitch is correct?

 

You prolly will need the longer skinnier ones with aftermarket rims.

The fat stockers don't fit in much.

 

So I guess my next question is can they be too long? Does the amount they stick out just depend on preference?

 

My wife says yes. Are we talking about the samething?

They matter greatly.
You should have got new lug nuts when you bought the wheels.
Use factory wheels & lugs. Take to a GOOD tire shop & ask for lugs.
I put too short of lugs on an old truck & snapped them trying to get them to torque!

I don't think its possible to get it too long. Too short is a possibility I guess. Not enough threads and/or to short for the bolt.

 

This is a safety issue!
If it is too long it will not torque correctly.
Call the wheel manufacturer and tell of your application and get correct lugs.
I have had a wheel come off a truck while plowing. It that happened at 60mph I would be dead.
Pay to get it right.

Aftermarket wheels on a Toyota often require “et” lug nuts

 

what you do before installing the new wheels you remove the toyota lug nut .. you measure how long the stud sticks out ... then install the new wheel and measure the stud sticking out .. if the same or a little more then the lug nut should work .. if the stud is shorter and also the angle is not the same on the wheel this is a problem .. some have replaced the studs because they where too short and the nuts will loosen.

if the studs stick out too much make sure the nuts will not bottom out as this will cause the stud to snap off ..need a tool to measure these ..properly

 

Then how long is too long?

I'm not expert but I still don't see how too long of a lug is the problem.

if the lugs nuts are longer than OEM not a problem.. if the wheel studs are shorter with the new wheels on then that is a problem ...less thread in the nuts the nut will loosen ..

check it out measure and then use the proper nuts..also the wheel studs have to stick out the same or more ...

 

That what I was thinking. As long as its seated properly I'm not sure how a longer lug would hurt.

 

I swapped out my rims and tire . About 3 weeks later, I started getting a knock or thump. The runner was taken in 4 times to diagnose. The first tech, said (I have a thread about all this on here somewhere) your wheels were lose. Retighted and it's gone. Cool beans. 3 days later, it was back.

Runner was taken in 3 additional times for this. Second time, the same tech said " these new rims need to be torqued at 120flbs to get tight. I flipped my shit, and had them put on record, I will NOT BE liable for broken/replacing wheel studs.
4th time in for same noise, the tech called, and had to replace all but I think 5 studs on the rig. He did that, (this was a different tech this time) and then found the lugs that where used for the newer rims, where just a hair to long. They hung out the back of the rim. So, they would just clamp down on the spindle and not tightening the wheel down to the spindle. He put hair shorter/proper lug nuts on, torqued to 72lbs or whatever recommended is, and I've never had the problem since. Just saying, if your lugs protrude out the back side of your rim, you'll have issues.

 

Sounds like they weren't too long but the wrong type.

Too long wont protrude out of the back it will stick out of the rim more toward the outside.

 

I do the tire rotations and torque the nuts to 80ft lbs.. after a couple of days I re-torque the nuts.. most times the nuts did not move on the 2nd torque check. I believe the TOY spec is 78 ft lbs..

also I never use any air guns never !!! wheel shops shit can happen with a gun..Costco tire shop are morons ...
