Hey Everyone... I am new to the T4R world and new to offroading and A/T. I have owned sports cars my whole life and finally was able to get a truck of my dreams!!!! Summer/performance tires are completely different than A/T and was wondering if I could get the communities advice and feedback. Please also feel free to call me out if I have this all wrong.

I honed in on two A/T models that I would like to purchase and just wanted to see peoples opinions on these models if you are running them. I use this truck as my daily driver but I do want to have tires that will allow me to do some offroading on the weekends. I am not looking to do crazy remote offroading, rock crawling, or multiday adventures. I just want to be able to drive on the beach with zero issues, do some wheeling in upstate NY. My BIGGEST question is will these two wheels fit on my stock truck (no lift yet) without rubbing on anything?? I am looking to buy them in 265/70 R17 and throw them on my stock rims.

When giving advice please leave out any snow/ice advice because I chaser winter storms I am going to have a pair of Blizzacks for the winter time. This would be my all season/daily driving tire.

    1) General Grabber AT 2 or X3
    OR
    2) Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac

Fwiw I hate my Duratracs. Have them on my Taco. Only 5k miles on them. Slips alot starting off in the rain even with light foot. Came with my truck but I'll be buying Michelins next time. Can't speak on the Grabbers.

I have always had Michelins on my T4r, and they have been flawless.

Thank you for that. Very weird was talking with a dude this weekend locally to me and claimed to be a "wheeling Guru" and said those were some of the best out there. That's a concern for me considering NJ gets a good amount of rain.

Have you taken them off pavement?? If so are they good in that aspect?

I'll be going for Michelin Defenders when I decide it economically makes sense. I think I saw two different models and one had a little bit deeper of a tread, but added like 4 or 5 lbs per tire. If I was going A/T I would probably go with the KO2's as there seems to be a ton of happy campers with them on here.

completely understand tons of people are rocking KO2. But it seems to be the go to tire for EVERYONE. Regardless if they are using them or just buying them for an aggressive look. Ive heard the two tires I am looking at are great on the pavement and good for when I do want to take my 4R off road.

Yeah I see your point I'd lean towards the Grabber's then if I was you. Good price point and warranty seems a little better too. Only bad review I saw on the Grabber's was clay mud turning them into slicks as it gets lodged in the tread. All else fails do a search for reviews on the Youtube.

Thanks. Ive been down a dark hole researching tires and have watched tons of YouTube reviews but i want to see what actual users think about these tires. When you are a social media influencers and get paid to do things reviews start to become biased and heavily watered down.

Personally I'm getting falcon wildpeaks. couple hundred page thread in another forum recommend highly and there dirt cheap. Stock size only weigh 3 lbs more than stock and look beefy as heck. Another selling point is they are blackwall unlike KO2s. Yep I know you can mount whites in but that looks like crap on inside also

I would not buy Goodyear because of an incident with the company, not necessarily because of the tires. The General's look good but they might be a little loud on the highway. If I were going with one of these two it would be the General A/Tx. Their web sight claims a 45 day satisfaction trial, so you could try them and know for sure if they were for you.

I am running Toyo AT's in stock size, and they are holding up well, do not vibrate, and are not noisy on the highway. They are satisfactory for the off roading I have done so far.

Bill, you are running the Open Country A/T II ?? If you dont mind me asking what kind of off roading do you do?? I dont plan on getting too crazy until I get my lift along with some other things I will need to be self sufficient in challenging terrain. Also the incident with Goodyear is that public?? if so what was it or was it a personal instance with one of your tires??

    Thanks for you input!

Ran a set of duratracs, I don't see how so many people run them. They aren't that good, the sidewalls tear easy.
The grabber is a good tire from what I've read.. but have no personal experience.
IMO the best A/T tire you can get is the hankook ATM, 265/70 would look good on your stock 4R and you shouldn't rub much, if at all.
I've ran probably 15 different sets of wheels and tires, mud terrains, ATs, I keep going back to the hankooks and I've abused them.

I am running the Open Country A/T II. When I first got them I used a cell phone db meter to test the sound before and after, and there was no difference between them and the factory Dunlops that came on the 4Runner. It does seem that they have gotten a little louder with wear(23,000 miles) but nothing like the BFG's on the Rubicon I had.

My off roading consists mostly of high desert sandy and rocky terrain and Southern Colorado Mountain mining trails. These can often be rocky, wet and muddy as well as snowy. Nothing really crazy just getting to remote places to fish and photograph.

The Good Year incident I had involved RV tires. I was on a trip and blew 3 of 4 Good Year Marathon trailer tires, which damaged the wheel wells of the RV. I replaced each one at a Good Year Dealer and paid for them. When I got home I found on an RV site that those Marathons were a factory defect and being replaced under a recall. I was not told that at any of the three dealers where I had the tires replaced. I contacted Good Year and they said they would re-emburse for the tires if I brought them to a dealer. I explained that I had been on the road and had left the defective tires at the various GOOD YEAR dealers where I had them replaced as I had no means or reason to carry around a blown tire. I furnished receipts from the GOOD YEAR dealers that had replaced each tire and Good Year said that wasn't enough. I told them I would never buy another Good Year tire and got a letter telling me that Good Year was the biggest tire dealer in the world and that they really didn't care if I bought another one of their tires.

Thank you for your advice and response. I will definitely stay away from Goodyear. I also found a thread that ripped apart the duratracs. I am going to go to a tire dealer this weekend and talk tires with them. I am going to ask about the Open Country AT II. I am glad you or no one got hurt and I hope Good Year paid for the damages they cause by their employees not knowing about a recall.

Seems like this happens a lot in the automotive world. I just traded in my Audi A4 2014 for the 4Runner and for 2 years audi kept sending me a recall letter about a part in the engine that might catch your engine on fire (very rare) but for 2 years they NEVER stocked the part to do the recall. Every time I called Audi got a different story. The really sad part about this is my mothers best friend is the General Manager of dealership and she was even drinking the BS Kool-Aid Audi was feeding her. Sorry my rant is over.

If you're going to get into serious off roading you'll probably want a set of wheels and tires to swap into for the day.

I would stay away from Goodyear. Had on several cars and trucks and while the look great they wear out quick.
I have Michelin LTX AT2 on my Tacoma and have for quite some time. I can't recall the miles. They've been great in the Western NY weather including the winter. I noticed the Grabbers have full depth side sipes like the Michelin and that seems very important to move that water from under the tread. So the Grabbers would make my short list but I still like the Michelin LTX for all around daily driving. I will be putting these on my wifes 4runner this fall or sooner if the inspection station fails the tread on the stock tires. The most "offroad we do is dirt roads and occasional fields. No rock crawling or deep mud.

KO2s (I run these), Cooper STT Maxx or Pro, or Toyo AT2 if you're 4x4 (ran these on my tacoma).

I am starting to break under pressure asking peoples opinions about tires and everyone alomst says KO2s. Im just wondering if they are that good or if its a go to tire for people who just want a super aggressive looking tire?? I dont care about my tires looking "badass" or aggressive. I just want a tire that is good on pavement and can handle some off roading. I will not be rock crawling or going into deep mudd. at least not now and if i do go that way ill have specific off road tires that are better designed for it.

No people run KO2s because they look great and perform great. Mine are C rated and have great road manners with almost no noise when on the highway unless it's a brand new road. Doubt the E rated tires are any different. Overall good AT tire.

If you want me to choose between the tires you chose? The generals because they are a rebranded bfg. The X3s are great from what i hear.

@BravesRunner No I appreciate the other models that people keep mentioning. But I privately messaged two people asking about their KO2 and they just stated they looked aggressive and thats what they wanted from a tire.

Gotcha gotcha! Mine came with the KO2s and they impressed me enough that I'd like to get them again once these wear out.

Thank you for your advice and information. I actually might do KO2 275/70 on my stock R17s.

I run 285/70/17 KO2s on mine. Behave on road, and they get down, when in the shit. Utah winters are a mother, and they do well. I'm at 35k on my 18, all but 5k of that on the tires. Still look good, and haven't worn much. I've enjoyed them.

I ran KO2s on my Tundra (285/75/18)... loved em so I got a set for the 4runner (285/65/18)... love em. I've had great luck with them both on and off road. They are a little heavy being E rated (18") so they did affect mileage. If you get 17" tires then they will be C rated... a little lighter.

I know I'll be in the minority here but will share my experience with 3 sets of tires.
My 16 and 18 trucks each had a set of KO2s 315/70/17s, quiet and excellent street tire and handled awesome. I'm in Chicago so no off-road. I'll never buy them again. Although snow flake symbol they are indeed awesome in snow, the problem is on cold wet pavement with Chicago winter's they are unsafe(tires were new)
The compound of the tire reacts when cold and just rain in the mid 30s was like driving on banana peels. Traction in 2 or 4wd did not matter it like driving on black ice.
Summer time warm climate they are awesome
Winter I put on Michelin defenders that stuck to cold wet roads like glue. Only reason bought another set on the 18 was I figured maybe the other set was a fluke..I mean after all 1000s of reviews said they are the best.
Trying falcon wildpeaks on my runner, another forum rates them well and they are cheap

I agree with you on the cold winter driving. I touched on this in another tire thread but ultimately the KO2’s are not that impressive in light snow/icy conditions/cold wintry mixes. Now in blizzards they are great. Additionally as the got older the rain traction in general wasn’t that good. I thought the Nitto Terra Grappler was better in rain and wintry mixes. But no AT tire I have ever owned compares to the Michelin’s in those conditions...LTXs takes the cake... And again I say this for strictly highway/road use...surprisingly though I have been amazed at some of the rocky hills they have gotten up with relatively no problems.

I had Wildpeaks 285 P, they were great but had DT road hazard the set, one tire even road forced balanced used way too much weight. I have new wheels and I wasn't going to accept a one off with more tread than the other 3 tires. I ended going back to Toyo open country At2 285 P, I have them on my Tacoma . They were 2.5 pounds lighter and felt softer in my opinion. The tread on open country is like a hybrid more aggressive they were a tad louder than my wildpeaks. But I did gain .5 mpg back.
