I just received my replacement cabin air filter from Amazon. This is a heck of a deal. Stock up, folks.

Quality is on par with OEM. Works just fine. Price is hard to beat. Part number is different than the Toyota part number but this is the one you need...

Has a bit of bad reviews of being basically transparent … keep us posted on how it performs for you.

Edit: Sure it's fine if rotated every 3-5k miles and still worth it at the low price point.

I'd buy 10 now and lose um after using 1. So I'd lose money.

It's a cabin air filter I mean honestly what's the rating criteria? I have no idea if I have a shitty one or not (OEM.) When I'm ready I'll buy the first national brand I touch in the parts store.

This denso is less transparent than the TYC. Obviously there's a trade off. Thicker equals less airflow, cleaner air. Thinner equals more airflow.

If you want more airflow, stick with the TYC. If you're prone to allergens, the denso is top notch.

I really don't care about "cleaning" the air. We breathe the outside air all the time and it's just fine.

But I AM happy to get a filter for 5 bucks. I'm not here to argue air filter quality. Just sharing a good deal. I like to change mine out every few months. $5 is a lot better than $15.

It's not "basically transparent". It's totally fine. I have no doubt you'd be satisfied. And I'm a stickler when it comes to quality stuff. This denso filter leaves nothing to be desired.

Anyone know who makes a good carbon filter for the cabin?

Have you ever looked at a new filter side by side with a 5 month old filter? One is gray, one is white.

I assume gray restricts airflow? I'm not certain (nor am i an automotive professional). But for five bucks two or three times a year, I'm game.

I've seen the WIX and Fram ones and assume they are fine. My questions have always been: Do they restrict airflow and do they actually work?

My wife's Infiniti had one in it....When I went to change it, I unknowingly bought a regular one. Not sure there has been any difference, but then it's her car and I doubt she'd notice any airflow changes.

I figure I breathe the outside air all the time and have made to the half-century mark just fine, so I just spray my cologne of choice on the filter every few weeks to keep the cabin smellin' good. Ok seriously, I don't see a big issue with this particular filter, but I really do change it periodically just for giggles. thanks to OP for the heads up.

I've used thick ones and thin ones. Pros and cons to both. I actually prefer the thicker ones that restrict a bit of air. So when it's on the lowest fan setting I'm just getting a tiny bit of ventilation. With the thinner filters, you actually get quite a bit of airflow on the lowest fan setting. I do like the thinner ones in the summer for AC blasting on high.

But we're really splitting hairs here. In the last week I've tried the $16 Purolator filter that I'm convinced would filter near microscopic pollens, dust, allergens, etc. The filter media is very dense. If you live in a dusty climate and like to have outside air in the cab, this is the filter for you.

I also tried the $4 Denso in the first post here and although it's not nearly as dense as the Purolator, the airflow isn't that noticeably different on high. But on the low fan setting it lets more air through.

I'm totally satisfied with both filters and will probably go with the denso from here on simply due to price. I like to swap mine out a couple times a year. I just don't like running a gray filter. And after 6 months, mine are gray.

I'd imagine the Purolator will "gray up" much faster than the Denso, simply due to the thickness. It's a fairly stout filter media. Looks very similar to my Honeywell HEPA home air filter.

To be honest, if you swapped a thick filter for a thin filter in any of our trucks without telling us, we probably wouldn't know the difference. That's the conclusion I've come to this week running both thick and thin (Purolator and Denso).

In my experience the carbon ones DO restrict airflow. At least, they did in my Tacoma. Haven't tried one in the runner.

Update. And a surprise. So the $16 Purolator filter is much thicker than the $4 Denso. But today I took both filters and held them up to a light source.

To my surprise, the cheap $4 Denso was actually more opaque than the $16 Purolator, even though the Denso is thinner. I could actually see clear spaces through the Purolator, which will certainly let dust/particles though.

The Denso is more like tissue paper (thinner), while the Purolator is more like a sponge (thicker). That's a big exaggeration, but an analogy to make my point.

The Denso filter is going to filter more thoroughly than the Purolator, but due to its thinness, I think it will actually provide more airflow.

Conclusion: the Denso is a great filter at a great price.

I already ordered 10 of 'em :) … thanks again for the info.

Btw .. most trucks I've had to take off the glove compartment door to access the filter housing. The 4Runner has the housing right inside the back of glovebox so should be a super easy task. Dealers usually want $100.00 to do this for you -lol

This filter will fit 4Runner? Amazon site says it won’t fit 4Runner, did the Vehicle deletion.

Ordered a few of the Wix filters with activated carbon from Amazon for @ $10 each. Haven't swapped out the original yet though. Always had good luck with Wix filters. They seem to be a quality part.

Just picked up another one for my wife's highlander. Thought the dealer would be changing it with oil changes (leased), but I guess not...

Don't have the link right now, but I did see a 4 pack on Amazon. Could save a little bit of cash.
