    Hi Everyone,
Im new to the forum and new to the 4runner (and 22re) game. My 1988 4Runner is having problems starting, it will crank over but I dont think its getting fuel, I was able to crank it over for a few minutes and it would sputter a few times and eventually fire up about two weeks ago, now when I crank it over nothing happens, just keeps cranking until the battery dies. I sprayed some starting fluid into the intake and it would fire using that but would not continue running after the starting fluid is burnt up which leads me to think that it is not getting fuel.

I think I'll start by jumping the battery port and the fuel pump port in the diagnostic port and loosen the banjo at the cold start injector to see if I have fuel pressure...?

Any other suggestions on where to start?

Sounds like you’ve got a solid plan. Check the inline filter.

If you don't get pressure I would check voltage at the pump. I have had relays go bad in the past. Theres an access panel under your back seat if you didn't already know that. Makes it nice to not have to drop the tank!

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
It's called the Circuit Opening Relay, and it's mounted above the computer over behind the passenger kick plate. Little hard to find. Best way is to unbolt the computer, and just move it out of the way. Don't bother taking the plugs off it. The COR is right above it, and easy to access.

Yeah, I had the same problem, too. I jumped the test connector, and the fuel pump ran fine, so it was the COR. Replaced it, and now it works like it should.
I, personally, would replace the relay if it's bad. It's a real good safety feature, stopping the fuel pump if the engine dies, like in an accident. Keeps fuel from continuing to be pumped, dumping it all over the place, creating a real bad fire hazard.

    Does this help?

My 1985 Toyota 4 Runner would start when cold but then when hot would only crank and eventually start up but it would almost drain the battery too. I got frustrated and thought the fuel pump that is under the back seat, and under a plate on the passenger side is where the fuel pump is...I replaced it with a Denso fuel pump along with the fabric filter (included) and I have never had a problem starting again...not quite the same problem but it's an easy fix to replace the fuel pump and really pretty cheap...like $65.00 and about an hour of time...I hope this helps
