Hello i was just thinking, when my 4runner is older lets say 7 years + will it be worth anything if the electric car/suv craze is implemented, or is it going be in the very distant future ? what do you guys think ? cheers

I obviously do not have a crystal ball and cannot see the future. All I can tell you is not everyone is going to jump on the electric bandwagon. There are far too many problems with electric cars for it to be a viable solution. We went out of our way to find a mostly mechanical engine (yes it does have a DD11) with a manual transmission but is pretty mechanical besides that. It's a 1991 3.0L Gen 2 4Runner (28 yrs old!) and we bought it for 5k just a few weeks ago and i have had several people want to buy it from me since.

How is that for resale value?

Like my 06 Rav4 V6, I will likely never sell either, because they are Toyota and they are too dependable.

I think 4Runners as they are now will always have decent resale value, mainly because a lot of people like them. If electric cars are the main form or transport 20 years from now, there will still be people willing to buy the old style 4Runner, much like people seeking out older land cruisers and FJs. When less and less of the old style 4runners are available, their value will increase. That's my best guess anyways.

All cars are going to be worthless when everything becomes self-driving and the act of driving itself becomes illegal. The real value will be in theme parks you can go drive a car manually.

I feel this is at least 20 years away and it may never take hold until the prices come waaaay down. In fact I believe the EV craze will remain high end and there will be hybrids for us poor people. I believe this because companies like Mazda are still developing IC engines and these can be produced and sold a lot cheaper than EV's. That new engine from Mazda is awesome. Sky-active X

When/if they produce that engine into a hybrid drivetrain...what? 75-90 MPG??

Charge cycle limits, more charge cycles=less range, limited range, charge speed, energy density is low, temperature plays a significant role in all of the above. Let’s also not forget the impact of mining materials for batteries.

It’s a political fad. Hydrogen is the answer. It may not be the answer humanity picks, but any scientist or engineer worth his weight will tell you the same.

Charge cycle limits, like an engine wearing out? More charge cycles meaning less range, it’s mandated that after 7 years EVs still need to get their claimed range of new. EV batteries are not built like cell phone batteries. Limited range is only a mental road block, it’s actually under 3% of road users will need to go a 200+ miles in a single shot. Charge speed is slow if you’re judging off old tech. 200+ miles of range in under 15 minutes and getting faster certainly isn’t going to kill the EVs from becoming common place. Energy density is another one where you must being using outdated tech as your spot of comparison, battery tech is evolving at an insane rate all while the content of lithium, which is dirt to mine, drops. Solid state batteries with huge stores of energy and charge times faster than filling a fuel tank with liquid are on the horizon and coming fast.

The one single legitimate limiting thing is charging infrastructure.

When the Nissan Leaf, for example, is the same price as the Nissan Versa, EV's will be worth it.

When I can charge an EV as quick as I can fill up with a tank of gas, EV's will be worth it.

When I can pull up to a charging station anywhere like I can a gas station, EV's will be worth it.

All in, EV's cost more to own than an ICE vehicle of similar size and function. For the rich and for performance, EV's are great. Until I can do the things I listed above, I will be buying more ICE vehicles. For decades.

I guess ill add my 2 cents. IMO unfortunately EV and self driving will take over someday in my lifetime. I may be a young buck and i may be old fashioned but nothing is better than naturally aspirated and big block v8s and actually driving them on your own. But enough of my opinion and what is really going to happen. EVs are not as good as believed they have many limitations and are not a clean as believed. With lithium batteries and using electricity to charge is not any cleaner if not more harmful than a normal car. I think one day when people actually believe the facts and scientists can do their job and not have to listen to a fad going on we will switch to better energy options that will even replace electricity all together.

There will be issues with the disposal of all these large expensive caustic batteries that will need to be replaced every few years. Not sure about you, but I, for one, don't want those things in my landfill. (At least old engine blocks can be recycled) There is also the issue with their instability when involved in a crash. Again, no thank you on that risk.

It's simple, you cannot create power from nothing. There will always be a physical cost to the planet to create power. Sorry social justice warriors, this is not the answer....imo.

Also, what would vast areas do if a natural disaster hit and knocked out the power grid for weeks? Like massive hurricanes, floods, winter storms, tornadoes? If a majority are EV, they will be dead in the water, unless of course they fire up a fuel powered generator to make power to charge their electric car. Don't worry, those of us still driving mechanical cars will come save you.....for a fee of course.

This is very accurate, as someone in the meteorology field I have seen this happen people with EVs are in need of resources after the two hurricanes that hit last year because their cars cant be charged. Plus to add to this are aging power grid cant handle everyone charging their cars.

It’s pure ignorance to think EV batteries need to be replaced every couple years. And old ones are just being dumped in landfills. Ever heard of the Tesla Power Wall? It’s depleted car batteries that work great for use in a home, especially when combined with solar. As for mass power outage, you run a generator like everyone else. The fuel pumps at the gas stations aren’t going to run off hopes and dreams.

Obviously I’m not saying EVs won’t be limited in disaster scenarios compared to gas, but then again why are we using an extreme as the point of reference? By that logic a gas vehicle isn’t worth owning because an old low tech diesel that will run off whatever old combustible liquid you pour in the tank is the way to go.

I wouldn't call natural events extreme. I have lived thru 5 major hurricanes down here in sunny SWFL in my life and as a result I know what works in the aftermath. We have fuel (diesel and gas) reserves, we have solar banks, generators, water supplies and ammo (should someone try and help themselves to our stash :quickdraw:). I am not saying all EV is bad, I really enjoy it in my golf carts. All I'm saying is it would be smart not to put all of your proverbial eggs in the same basket...in the event of a natural disaster. Make sure EV is not the only horse in your stable.

Just remember those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Peace

Quality testing and development of preproduction and prototype vehicles and technology is what I do for a living, what would I know about today’s tech and what’s coming in the future lol.

Well WWIII should be well under way by then. So Toyota will probably shift their manufacturing to armoured 4Runners.

electric battery vehicles will slowly increase in purchasing .. others will not buy battery vehicles because in the cold weather and if your needing a long ride to get to work ..

live in a warm area no cold and short runs I would buy an electric vehicle..
engines produce heat in the cold .. how is a battery vehicle gonna keep my toes warm.defrost the windows and the battery will have 50% less power ..

my area there are some electric vehicles some.. but in winter I never seen any operating electric ..we here need 4WD vehicles to get around when the snow hits .. all my neighbors have trucks/suv's 4wd.. no electrics ..
when I go to Florida I have seen many electric vehicles and I have seen many charging stations down there ,, .. a load of Tesla..

    This is great!

I would love to see a hybrid-style 4Runner with 4 small electric motors at each wheel. Imagine the traction capabilities.

Way more torque than what our rigs currently have. It would be an offroading beast.

    Check this thing out:

    Pininfarina Battista GT

1,900 Horse Power - All Electric Motor

0-60mph in less than 2 seconds (faster than a Formula 1 car)
