So what you suggest because it's my first car and don't have any experience....the guy from AZ said that using synthetic will leak the seals or something like that...

I was all ready to post a sarcastic reply but OP seems legit....so....

Don't overthink this. Oil is oil. If 10W30 is specified for the truck then just buy a cheaper non-synthetic 10W30. Whatever filter they have in stock that fits is fine.

Thinking about getting a new paint job.. Purple metallic or pearl, I'm not sure yet.
I use Quaker State 5W-30 SAE, with a FRAM High Mileage filter. My godfather (the head mechanic at Red Mcombs Toyota) says that is perfect for my truck. FYI, my odo currently reads 216k.

Look at the oil filler cap and use what is specified. Synthetic will not cause leaks.

I did an oil change with semisynthetic and got a bit of an oil leak - after no leaking at all for 14 years.

Going to pick up straight conventional oil for 5000 mile change. Bahamas is all short trips under 10 miles.

Last change I used a good filter.

Semi-Synethic is better than dino conventional, they say, and I'll stick with the semi one more time.

I got 150,000 miles on my 2005 4runner (owned since new). Since I'm in the Bahamas, all of the driving has been short trips - most under 3 miles - so I've decided to change the oil at 3000 miles (instead of 5000 or 7000), from now onward.

UPDATE: Months later. Changed the oil and filter back to conventional and no more drips oil!

Got some small drips when I went to conventional. Wish I never had tried that synthetic. Straight conventional now 10-30W every 4000 miles.

What ever the garage uses that does it for me. Don't know, don't care. Daily driver (car) has 160,000(ish) on it have replaced a starter and timing belt. Other than the obvious maintenance items like Brakes. Car doesn't care what oil goes in it sure the Toyota won't. Did the Toyota once at 5,000 miles garage said they use "Toyota recommended oil."
    Good enough for me.

This would be my approach if I didn't know anything about the history of the vehicle-- it came from the factory with 10W-30 conventional oil. So, I'd put 10w-30 conventional into the vehicle.

Why even consider synthetic? It's a concern not worth your time. Pour in some 10w-30 and drive away.

Is it true about that using synthetic oil will bring you oil leaks? I have always thought that synthetic is the way to go for motors period. And it has me thinking. maybe time for some research.

Some people way over think oil too much these days. Buy a good solid brand name with a decent reputation and change as recommended or a little sooner. I'm not a chemist I can't speak to what will happen at 200,000 miles but I also don't lay awake over it. It's just a car for gods sake.

Well back when I didn't give a crap about my old car I always went to Walmart for an oil change. Same price for any full synthetic oil on their shelf and you could pay extra for a filter upgrade. I used to do the oil changes myself, but I added it all up once and for like $15 more I realized I didn't love my car that much any more. I could just have them do the work and walk over to IHOP for breakfast....but I don't have to worry about that any more. The only add on I let the finance guy at the dealership talk me into was 5 years of oil changes for $250.00. It's really 3 1/2 years considering I still had a 1 1/2 years of Toyota complete...but the math seemed like it was still worth it to me.

If you like to change your oil at shorter intervals (5,000 miles or less), then conventional oil from a well known brand is the call (assuming your vehicle doesn't require synthetic).

Synthetic is worthwhile when you change it at higher intervals (usually twice that of conventional oil).

I suspect people claim leaks after the switch from conventional to synthetic are not because of the nature of synthetic itself, but a result of additives and cleaners in the new oil unblocking clogs that were in place.

Totally agree I'm done doing all the vehicles including the '18 Toyota. Still on the fence about dealer changes even free. I do like the idea of the covered service calls though just so you get in their system should anything come up down the road. Soooo... They probably will do my free changes and that's it.

UPDATE: THIS really happened. The oil leak in the garage floor stopped on it's own to my amazement just a month after this post.
I laid new cardboard where the oil spots were showing, and there are no more.

I purchased some NAPA High performance 10W-40 (conventional dino/Quaker State/Ashland Oil) for my next change which I will add with a filter in another 1000 miles.
    Can't get luckier than that!

UPDATE: Changed the oil with 10W 40 this morning. Didn't show an oil leak after the oil change? Temperatures here are in 90s during summer and lows of 60F in winter.

Can't use synthetic oil in an older 2005 4runner. Stick with conventional oil or you will have oil leaks you didn't have before the synthetic.

@Shah92 If you’re anything like me, I really like to take in-depth looks at product difference. Not all oil are made the same, some have different additive packages that function for a number of different things. Depending on your location, you might need oil that performs better during cold temps. I don’t mean to discredit anyone posted here but much like most things, the more you spend, the better the product generally is. If you’d like to see a comparison of majority major oil brands (Schaeffer’s, amsoil, Mobil 1, lucas etc...) I highly recommend watching “projectfarm” YouTube videos. Per his tests, amsoil and penzoil ultra platinum are the two highest performing oils (he also tests synthetic and leaks).

Having said all that and keeping preference out of mind, as long as you use recommended oil viscosity and appropriately timed replacement intervals; Toyota’s last forever!

best of luck and Welcome aboard!!

It's hard to review oil without access to the lab test results. I mean you put it in the engine of your car and your car still works, great. Not much to review. You'd have to set up two identical cars with different oils and run them for 100,000 miles to do a proper test at home without specialty test equipment. So for my review I'm going to focus on what those certifications on the bottle actually mean, because not all oils have the same certifications. Demystifying oil certifications A long time ago people had low standards for oil. Engines were simple, a coke was ten cents. Now oil is expected to help you get great mileage, work with crazy direct injection turbo engines, run E85 ethanol, not damage your emissions system, and keep your engine from wearing out. To do all this your oil

Hey, it's synthetic oil with all the proper ratings to use in modern automobiles. But it's also refined by the same company that makes Wally World Syntec full synthetic motor oil and WW sells it for about $16 for 5 quarts so that will continue to be my go-to supply. Amazon is facing the cost of shipment factor in a lot of bulk items now and it's making them less competitive on price than they were previously (but more profitable which makes stockholders happy). Assuming it is the same as Wal-Mart, I've sent samples of their synthetic off to Blackstone labs for oil analysis on various occasions and it always tests very, very well (as well as the Mobil 1 samples I've sent off) so I'm not embarrassed about buying the house brand for my cars. If Amazon gets competitive on price, I'll gladly purchase it from them.

The oil itself is good enough. Giving a two star rating because there is no clear visibility strip on the side of the bottle, so that you can tell how much oil you’ve poured into your engine. The fluid level markings are there, but they don’t do you a whole lot of good without being able to see where current fluid level. C’mon Amazon, you’re better than this! I guess the product managers for this item have never had to change their own oil My car takes 4.4 quarts - thank god I had a leftover name brand bottle to pour into to get an accurate reading of how much I had put in.

This is the review for Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20. For some reason, Amazon is not linking my purchase to right product (showing available through other seller). I also purchased the same but with different wt 5W-30, so linking that for this review. Engine oil : Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-20 Car : Lexus LS 460L Current miles : 45k Oil change interval 5k Filter : Lexus/Toyota filter I did an oil analysis on this oil after 5k miles on it. The results are astounding as you can see from the attachment. Previous oil analysis at 36k with Toyota 0W-20 full synthetic oil shows on the right column. Compare to that Pennzoil out performed Toyota oil in each ad every department. Please note, based on my readings Toyota oil performed better than other oils including Mobile 1 based on various postings. This goes to show Pennzoil Ultra is one of the best (if not the best) oil available in

This is a very good oil that produces a very good used oil analysis reports. It appears to do a very good job of keeping the internal clean, And although not designed as a long drain interval oil you can’t push the limit. For instance I’ve went 15,000 miles with a turbo charged engine albeit with a lab report to justify the length. Do not be fooled by it not having DEXOS 1 certs anymore. Our GM vehicles prior to the GEN two certification can still use this oil even though it doesn’t have the license. The reason it doesn’t is it because the oil isn’t good enough anymore it’s just that they had to re-submit to get approvals for Gen 2 and this oil contains two much of one additive to be certified for Gen 2. And it does not do

It's good oil- if you look at reputable sources which have independently tested this oil, they are all complimentary. There are so many urban legends about oil and so many anecdotal stories from people, it's just bordering on ridiculous mostly. I retired as a senior manager and engineer with a major domestic auto manufacturer and have worked in Germany with a major auto group as well. I'm not a lubrication engineer, but I've sat in many engineering meetings with people who are so I have a pretty good grasp on the subject. Having campaigned a million dollar race car for years, my crew and engine builders have shared a lot of information with me as well. Most important thing- change your oil on time. If you aren't getting tests done to determine when that is, adhere to the manufacturer suggestion. If you drive hard or in mountainous terrain or tow, follow

I own a 2013 Sonata (purchased new)with around 106,000 miles now. I have used this oil in the car every change. I change my oil every 5000 miles. I get the oil tested every couple oil changes. I will post a copy of a report from around 90k For you to look at for yourself but the last of the report says it best "This engine is wearing better than most of its kind. Fuel dilution is harmless at just a trace, and a TBN of 4.7 is good and strong. Try 7,000 miles for the next run."

If you read the data sheets on this, it is comprised of groups 1 2 and 3 oils. Those are all conventional!! Castrol was the first to make fake synthetics. Mobil 1 sued them, however the courts said its fine to market any oil as synthetic. They of course don't care about Americans. Then if you go on Castrols website. They recommend 3000 mile oil change intervals with this. Thats a whole lot less than Mobil 1, which rates super synthetic at 7500, M1 at 10k then ep and ap 15k and 20k. Any oil with the API seal is good for 3000 miles!! You can just go with the cheapest Walmart supertech. I am not some Mobil 1 super fan, however if you read Valvoline, Pennzoil, Castrol oils web pages, they all recommend 3000 mile oil changes!! If their oil is so

Purchased several 5W30 5 quart bottles since it was advertised as full synthetic only to learn that MSDS clearly states up to 75% is "highly refined oil" further research of the base oils listed in the MSDS published by company that the base oil also contains Group 1 & Group 2 oils. I also froze oil in my freezer overnight and it gelled up far more than Quaker State full synthetic and Pennzoil indicating the oil is not a good oil for my winter application. Contacted company directly and they stated it is "acceptable marketing practice" .

Once upon a time, my car (which I inherited at 120,000 miles) had a significant amount of piston slap during a cold start. After it warmed up, it would go away. I figured it would be an interesting experiment to switch to synthetic oil to see what the hype was about and if it really made a difference in engine longevity, especially now that my engine was "getting on in its days". I got some of this Castrol 5w30 full synthetic purely because BMW and Triumph motorcycles use it as their factory fill. Maybe Castrol pays them to be the factory fill, but hey, if the engineers are happy with it, I'm sure it'll be okay. After the first cold start, I immediately noticed that the piston slap would go away by the end of the driveway, rather than most of the way to my destination. I figured

Just switch from Mobile1 to Castrol Edge in my 08 Ranger. Forgot that the manual wanted 5w-20 but I fond this out in a forum. The main reason 5W-20 was specified for your engine is to increase the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) reported to the Federal Government. CAFE is the combined average fuel economy of all of a vehicle manufacturers product line. Minimum CAFE levels are specified by the Federal Government. In order for a vehicle manufacturer to continue selling profitable large trucks and SUV's, which typically have poor fuel mileage ratings, as compared to smaller cars, and still meet mandated CAFE requirements, they must also sell enough of the smaller cars which have much better fuel economy ratings to offset the poor fuel economy ratings of the larger vehicles. For model year 2001, the change to a 5W-20 oil will allow Ford and Honda's overall CAFE to increase by

I'm in the process of testing Mobile 1 vs Castrol in my V6 Malibu. I notice that when I start my vehicle with the Castol I don't hear the lifters as much as I did when I was using Mobile 1 or Royal Purple. I'm not knocking Mobile 1 I feel its done well for me (used it last winter and summer through three changes). I have started using Castrol this fall/winter with 70 degree F mornings and 15 degree F mornings so far the lifter tapping has been reduced significantly.

I'm not an expert myself, but my older (waaay older) brother is a petroleum engineer who was in the business for over 30 years, so I listen to his advice. Buy whatever is on sale, and change oil and filter regularly. Seems to be working.

People grumble about Fram as well.

I dont personally use them but my dad does and his cars last 100k+ no problems before he sells. Now if you were driving a race car maybe I would have second thoughts but lets be real 90% of us don't need the extremely high quality stuff.
