Nailed it, its one of the last remnants of authenticity! Last of its kind type of thing. Lets all hope Toyota continues to keep it alive and true to its nature! Any drastic changes would be like making it soulless; you know what they say...a snake without its venom is just a belt...

He a least appreciates what it is. Most articles do nothing but bash the 4Runner saying it has no point and not family friendly.

What are you talking about? That was a lighthearted take on the truck; one that everyone here should be able to appreciate.

The 4Runner is an anachronism, but we love it not so much for what it is but what it isn't. And the rear window rolls down.

Nailed it. The reviews of it being outdated and in need of upgrades to take it to level of current SUVs is exactly why it’s the perfect truck for me. I don’t care for having all that fanciness, even the crawl control is beyond my level, but I’ll take it, used or not.
I’ll beat that dead horse one more time, this is why I bought a 2019 and not the 2020, the TSS is the major step towards the end of real toyota OffRoad vehicle.
And, the rear window rolls down.

Couldn't get past the first couple of sentences. "Old enough to remember when SUV's took off" "explorer", yet another hipster. So no Broncos, jeeps, Blazors, fj's... Skip right to the mid 80's. Kids these days.

TSS is the reason I pulled the trigger on 2019 4R for myself and the wife. We heard rumors of TSS gaining ground.

Maybe I’m no good with satire. Also I missed the part about the rear window.

To be fair, that is impressive for the AWD Telluride

Did he mention whether or not the rear window goes down?

20% tint, more on the way
I just read the article and my immediate thoughts were that the guy doesn’t understand what a 4Runner is.
If I wanted to throw on a pair of Birkenstocks and ride down to my local independent coffee shop ( because Starbucks isn’t as cool ) then I’d probably buy an Audi Q5 or a BMW X5 and live my life happily that way. Both are good looking capable SUVs with impressive drivers technology and make a statement when pulling up to the Cheesecake Factory. If that’s your thing, more power to you.

Instead I chose a Trd Pro 4Runner due to its proven no bullshit reliability and capability in places I don’t want to get lost/stuck in. I think it’s a fantastic truck but I bought it due to its amazing looks and toughness. During my quest for a new automobile I chose to avoid turbo vehicles and newer technologies for proven reliability and peace of mind.
I feel there are absolutely better riding SUVs out there which obviously get better MPGs and some even look as good if not better than my 4Runner ( not many ). I could have purchased anything I wanted when car shopping but the choice was clear when comparing reliability, looks, price, comfort, resale, and capabilities combined.
I understand his point but he’s obviously a person that doesn’t need a 4Runner. Driving down a fire road to get to the camp with showers doesn't mean you need a super capable off road truck. Most Mazda’s will make it without issue.
I on the other hand drive 4-5 hours and hit roads that look like creek beds at the end with a truck full of gold mining equipment, coolers, food, a dog, a wife, and about 6 tons of garbage that make life easier whilst camping; all the while enjoying my softex seats and never thinking my 4Runner will have a issue when I get there or come home.
Admittedly I probably would have been fine with a standard off road or premium but the Pro looks badass and I work hard and can afford to spend extra coin on shit I don’t need.
I’m very happy with my 4Runner and have not regretted my purchase for 1 second since I bought her new in 2016.
My point is that if someone gave me an Infiniti and that’s not what my life needed then I’m probably give it a Luke warm/poor review as well. If you buy a car that fits your true needs then you’ll be happy with your purchase. Many people are not honest about what they need and end up regretting the purchase. Even though Ezra Dyer is a journalist for multiple magazines doesn’t mean he is smart, it just means he can articulate well based on his experiences. There’s a reason Toyota sells huge numbers of these vehicles every year. At the end of the day the article is an opinion and I’m MY opinion the guy is a tool.
And did I mention the back window rolls down?!

So yeah what others said. Its the reason I bought a 19 instead of the 20. The perfect replacement for safety sense is common sense! What a concept of being aware of your surroundings. With what they say is outdated was the draw for me. People buy classic cars and restore them. I bought a brand new one, no restoration needed
