are the OEM cargo covers that unroll over the cargo area worth getting? Looking at the "hanger" indentations, I'm having a hard time imagining how tightly it would fit.

I'd like something to cover the area. What are your thoughts of the usefulness of the OEM cover?

Funny. I saw that one too. That's what reminded me to ask the question.

I have the OEM Cargo Cover. It is OK. It's a little clumsy to take in and out and its a little wonky to get both ends locked into the slots when you are covering your cargo. The other issue I have with it is that I don't like to leave it open and in the Runner when my dog is back there. I don't think he likes it either and it kind of gets in his way. But when you retract it, it is too long to just lay flat on the floor next to the rear seat. So in the end, if the dog goes the CC stays on the work bench. I tend to only take the CC when I know I am going to be out with items left in the rear for a period of time.

If I did not love my damn dog so much I would leave him home and just use the CC in the Runner all the time and I would probably have fewer complaints

    FWIW

They are very useful for concealing stuff but I have found it to be more of a hassle that anything else. Took mine out and it is just sitting in my shop.

We use the one in my wife's car all the time so it was one of the first things I asked the dealer for. Had it in there for a couple of months and took it out. Now only use it when we know we'll need to cover something.

OEM cargo cover actually only covers about 75% of the space. There are gaps between the cover / seat backs and between the cover / hatch.

I was not impressed and would not buy it again.

If you recline the seats will it close the gap?

I purchased it for my 2019. And, was very depressed. The gap behind the back seats is big. I got one stock with my 2004 and yes it was a pain when you needed the vertical space but it was nice to have a cover storage area.

Even if you fully recline back seats there's still a gap?

If you recline the seats there is no gap. If you have a determined thief with a flashlight yeah they will be able to potentially see through the small gap near the rear hatch but I use mine strictly when I have some things in the back that I want to hide from prowling eyes, ie.. bags, purses etc... I never leave bags in my car or truck and have never been broken into despite parking in some pretty sketchy locales.. having the cargo cover on makes me feel better about leaving my car parked places if I have jackets, shoes , bags or anything else I need to leave in the ride. The peace of mind alone is worth it to me. Just place said items in the center and voila, they are covered. It is a bit of a pain to close, particularly with my third row seat belts clipped to the side brackets, but well worth it and is easily removed if I need more cargo space.

I looked at your pics and I was like, “no way!” But I checked mine and sure enough there is the same gap. I guess with my tint it makes it a lot less noticeable.. but yeah definitely seems they could have made it fit a little nicer against the hatch.

Thanks for posting pics. I'm now leaning toward the "in the way" crowd... if i could get one for free, I'd take one for the garage. And put it in the truck when I thought I might appreciate it on a weekend road trip. But I can't see throwing down a $100 for one at this point.

Your back seats should be adjustable by sliding them back and forth (reach underneath the seats for the bar) this should make up the gap from the back seat to the cargo cover.

I know that this is a long winded post for a stupid cover. But my 2004 was broken into twice because someone saw something on the seats. They didn’t open the doors. Just broke out the rear passenger window to grab a coat and some apple cables. The other time the front window was broken to snag an Amazon box (which was empty). So the only place to hide things is in the back. This is just another place where Toyota is getting kind of cheap on a $40K vehicle. If I was thinking I should have grabbed the old cover before I traded it in.

In the same boat. How much vertical space are you working with @Jkdog ? Debating if my Rubbermades will fit underneath it or not.

Well... in the 2019 4R without a third row, the second row doesn’t slide back it only reclines... interesting, my 2004 4R didn’t slide or recline. So 2016 was a good year.

    True, I haven't seen a 4R with third row.
