FJ’s are pretty bad. I had a 2008 FJC and I had cracks all the damn time

That has to be the issue- its not the glass per se, but the orientation/angle of the windshield.

I think it’s both. But, I’m not overly concerned about it at the moment.

Has anyone tried fixing a chip themselves before it starts spreading?

Pretty easy or is it a professional job?

I have not tried to patch/fix chips myself, but it's a very fast and easy job for a pro. There is a mobile guy that sets up in the Fred Meyer parking log near me every Saturday morning. He has patched mine a couple of times and it takes about 5 minutes total. And, he submits to my insurance so that's easy, too. I bet most glass places offer patching as an option, also. My preference is to patch when possible as I worry about pulling the windshield cowling too many times and potentially damaging clips, causing more rattles, etc. So, you may be able to do it yourself, but it's super fast and easy for the guy with the tools.

In the 12 years I had my '04 I had 4 windshields replaced for cracks. Safelite did all 4 of them. I also had a bunch of stone chips fixed by them. The insurance company had no problem fixing the stone chips without a deductible payment. They told me is was cheaper just to have the chip fixed than to have it go into a crack and then replace the whole thing. So far so good on my '17 but then again there is no major interstate road construction going on in my daily commute like there was in the past.

Safelite repaired mine on my 17 Pro. Did not have it long. All this salt and shit they put down on the Pa roads. The guy that did the repair said they do a lot of 4runners and jeeps because of the front windshield being more upright compared to a lot of other vehicles.

my 1996 Impala windshield was replaced last year original .. had no cracks but a few chips. I got it replaced because the windshield was yellow and not clear .. the material between the glass caused a visibility issue.

The Impala windshield is with a greater slope so when a rock hit it the glass did not get damaged much.
the runner has a much higher windshield more vertical so I did get a few chips and the small rocks did do more damage than my Impala .

also the runner windshield is much thinner than the Impala . my vehicles old GM are much thicker . also I have seen new vehicles with thinner glass than my old GM vehicles probably a reason to reduce weight .

Make sense to me too. We’ll just have to be on the watch while driving!

Ouch , wow. When I took my Tacoma through Moab a couple yeara ago- we were in a bad sand storm- near monument valley. Winshield was pitted, and took some shine off the paint.
    :annoyed:
I think thinner glass is a recent trend for fuel economy/weight savings.

We traded in our Outback for this 4Runner. The Outback sunshade is easily 50% taller than the 4Runner windshield- meaning that car had a sloped windshield compared to the 4Runner.

My daughter did the same thing with her Jeep cause it has a little Jeep picture or something on the original. Any-who don't kid yourself about it being "OEM" anything can be faked/duplicated. Who's to say their not just putting the little emblem on them? You can buy knock off Gillette razor blades in a seemingly real
    Gillette box and everything.

Your BMW dealership probably had a safelite tech come out and install the factory BMW windshield. Been there and seen that. As long it is a great job, thats all that matters

BMW vehicles with all that electrical systems built in the glass is a $1800 or more cost .
also these vehicles must have obviously , the exact part # for that specific BMW.. a friend had this problem , they installed the wrong windshield. but he did have the glass insurance ..
he drives that BMW like 165MPH ... on the hywy.. got a speeding ticket 125MPH.. at 2am .

SC was where my two chips and crack occurred. On the drive into Charleston and on the way out. I’ve got 38k on my 4R since I bought it in May 2017. I’ve driven from VA to Alabama and back, no chips. VA to Seattle and back, no chips. VA to Kentucky and back, no chips. Drove across country and no chips.

Not sure but all within 72 hours in S.C. I have two.

I liked Charleston. Fun town! I stayed down on king street and walked all that area. Found a awesome BBQ place called smoke that had some awesome smoked wings.

So, We just had our windshield replaced by a good local company and when I sat in the car the mirror seemed lower, took some measurements and the mirror is mounted almost 2 inches lower than stock. The black "printing" on the new windshield extends down past the little dot stippeling. Just an FYI/Buyer Beware for all you out there. it is really annoying and there is nothing the glas sshop can or is willing to do about it apparently because that is how they come from the aftermarket factory. Just check your glass before you get everything replaced. I may end up having to pay to have a brand new windshield removed and replaced.
