I recently found this video on YouTube. Looks like a TRD Pro. Seems to do well in the snow, but the guy in a previous video talked about how the stock tires aren’t all that great. Thoughts? Comments?

I agree. It’s usually that way with most vehicles. They throw on tires that are made for summer highway driving. I can never wrap my head around the reason why a vehicle manufacturer would build a 4x4 or other off-road vehicle, but add summer type highway tires to them. It’s just outright stupid to me.

If they added some halfway decent tires on these vehicles, then the vehicles could be able to handle snow, rain, and such much better.

About what specifically? The PRO comes with Nitto terra grapplers so they will do better in the snow than the stock Dunflops on the other models so maybe that is the difference in the two videos:notsure:

All manufacturers cut corners in certain areas.

Smooth ride and better gas milage i think are the main reasons.

It’s not cutting corners, there are multiple reasons they don’t come with more offroad oriented tires.

JD Power - For whatever reason, JD Power scores are a very big deal to automotive manufacturers. All Season (3 season) tires have less NVH which results in less complaints and improves their scores.

Safety - Despite the image people try to portray on social media, pretty much everyone spends a huge majority of their time on dry pavement. On pavement in general typical highway tires will have shorter stopping distances than A/T or M/T tires.

Government regulations - Wach year the fuel economy of every single vehicle built a manufacture for the US is averaged. Not each model but every individual vehicle of each model is averaged. If that average doesn’t hit a certain number the manufacturer gets hit with a very large fine from the government. All season tires are lighter and more efficient, they absolutely help bring the economy average up.

They still cut corners in one area or another. For instance every Toyota I have ever had, it's suspension starts to suck at about 30,000 miles and just gets worse from there. TRD or regular doesn't matter, Toyota cuts corners on it's suspensions.

Oh absolutely, everything aspect of the vehicle goes through a cost benefit analysis to make the production costs as low as possible.

Got rid of my stock tires the week I bought my 4Runner.

For most of the past two winters I have used my Continental TerrainContact A/T tires. SMOOTH ride, great traction in wet, snow, and did well on frozen packed snow and ice.

The Copper STT did well in the snow but want to save tread for 4 Wheeling Spring-Fall.
