275/70R17 or 285/70R17?

I have a leveled 2016 4Runner and it’s time to upgrade my wheels. Torn between the 2 tire sizes. I have a leveled rig in Fox 2.0 Coilovers and Fox IFP at rear. If using 285, Do I need an inch spacer at Front and 2” spring at rear? With new UCA and drop kit? Or just do 2.5” front and 1.5” rear without doing new UCA. This is 90-95% daily. I’m just worried that it will rub extremely if I don’t do the 3”F and 2” at Rear.

 

Not sure on lift but the narrower tire will cause less rubbing so 275/70r17 that’s 32.16/10.13

 

The height of your lift isn't going to prevent you from rubbing.

Rubbing has more to do with the backspacing of your wheels.

Using stock backspacing, you can run both 275's and 285's with no lift and very minor to no rubbing.

If you add wheel spacers, you are actually more likely to rub.

Alignment is also important. Push your caster up as high as it will go within spec.

You'll be fine with 275's (so long as you have stock wheel backspacing).

In the rare instance that you do rub, it will be minor and will either be on the front part of your fender liner or on your mudflaps. Look up "fender liner mod" to see how to fix this. As for the mudflap, you can always remove it or trim it. All easy stuff.

 

Thanks for the input brothers. I have 17X8.5 with 0 offset on my wheels. I don’t know if this will help. I’m not too familiar with the physics of the offset numbers. I appreciate all the input.

Do the stock 5th gen rims that nobody can give away have a 15 offset? Will going from that to a 0 offset cause any issues?

I am wondering the same, TRD ORP with stock suspension. The truck has the gray "TRD PRO" wheels, and I cannot find the specifications in the manual for these wheels. Basically I'm trying to ball on a budget and am looking to size up tires (275/70) with the stock suspension and wheels. But at the same time trying to be some what intelligent in my decision and getting a size the will work with a lift in the future. Any foreseeable issues?

I have a good deal with 285 BFG KO2 now in either C and E load. Installed and set of 4 for $790. I was going to get the 275 but they aren’t on promotion. $200-300 plus difference is huge.

 

Good to know Mike. I really appreciate your help bro. I spoke with someone and they said I can crank up and extra .5” on my Fox 2.0 Coilovers so total of 2.5” Front and I’ll do 1.5”Rear either spacers or spring. Then eventually I’ll add ICA Total Chaos even it’s not required or recommended.

 

The only thing I'm not sure about with your particular set-up is the 8.5" wheel width. Stock wheel widths vary from 7" - 7.5". An 8.5" wheel could lead to some additional rubbing.......maybe on the UCA, in which case a new UCA would help. But I'm not certain about this. Maybe someone who has a better idea could comment.

 

I have a Pro and with the stock wheels and Nitto RGs 285/70/17 with a 2.75 lift in front (Icon Cos) with SPC UCA. I do not rub and do not have BMC. And yes, I do wheel my 4Runner.
If you do end up cranking the COs down to achieve 2.5 in the front I'd get UCAs.

Got it! I might end up selling my set up now and will get TRD Pro wheels to avoid minimal rubbing. Thanks really for all the inputs.

 

I had to do zero trimming and still maintained my mud flaps.
At one point I had Icon tubular UCAs and on the passenger side rubbed at full lock in reverse.
Once I moved to SPC UCAs the adjustability was such that I was able to have the wheels pushed forward slightly to avoid any rubbing at all.
I've never ran TC UCA's so I cannot comment on those.

My advice is to go 285 tires (load C) with after market UCA's and crank it up to 2.5 in the front.
If you go KO2 they run a little small so that may help you too.

Yes.
I am 2.75 inches lifted in the front (Icon extended travel coil overs) and 2 inches (Icon springs) in the rear with Icon shocks.
SPC UCA's, Nitto 285/70/17 RG Load C.



If you are shooting for 2.5 inches of lift in the front you'd want to measure on level ground with the wheels straight from the center of the front hub to the lower fender lip and get a result of 22.5 inches.

 

I have 22 inches right now because it’s leveled. If I’ll go 2.5 I might do 1.5” rear. If 3” I’ll go 2” rear.

Can I use and put a 1” spacer in the Front in my Fox 2.0 Coilovers IFP so I can have a 3” total and would put 2” spacers at rear or spring just to have a 3/2” lift and a new TC UCA?

 

Dobinsons 2.5/1.5 inch lift. Stock upper control arms. 17 x 8.5 with -10mm offset. Falken 275/70/17 AT3W tires. I pushed the fender liner forward in the front and trimmer the normal painted area near where you push the fender liner forward. On the mud flap, I used a heat gun, mechanics glove and a spray bottle of cold water. I heated up the mud flap where it sticks out, pushed it back and sprayed it with cold water. Looks like it stock. NO rubbing.

 

So even with your lift of 2.5/1.5 there was still rubbing on 275?

 

From the sound of it he was rubbing than after the adjustments to the liners he had no rubbing.. keep in mind also different tires will very on size even when both are 275... so looking at3 specs section width is 11" and tread width is 8.8 vs ko2 specs section width is 10.9 and tread width is 8.9

Those pics were just reference sorry I was looking into swapping my rims and tires on my taco and wanted to get an idea of the different sizes..

These are more towards what you are looking for the size in the pics show 285 as 11.2 but the specs for 285 ko2 is 11.5 you have to do your own research to determine if it will work for you are not some people may have a 285 but there are to many factors to say yeah you will have no problems if you put it on.
