I searched for a thread on this topic and only found one from 2014. So, checking to see if there is current interest.

A couple of friends went back and forth with this and, in the process, the line between the two trims began to seem more blurry to me than I had previously thought. I already bought a 2019 Limited. Three features were important: AWD, automatic running boards, and leather seats. I had mixed feelings about the third row seats, but they came in handy shuttling people to various venues involved in one of my daughters' recent marriage.

I had not realized that The TRD Pro's TRAC system might yield a close approximation of what AWD is doing on say, a wet road, and that AWD might not do something critical in everyday driving. As for the automatic running boards, I could have had AMP Research's Powerstep installed; and from a brief sit-down inside a friend's TRD Pro, the fake leather seemed close enough. On the other side of the ledger, I can recall past, and imagine future, offroad situations where Crawl control would be irreplaceable. In addition, I'm one of those Limited owners who became caught up in the "can the 20-inch wheels and Yokohama Geolandar G96B all season tires be replaced, without rubbing, by the TRD Pro 17-inch wheels and one of the infinite variety of P-rated and LT-rated 265/70/17 tires," because if they do, and I don't want to modify the fenders/wheelwells, then I am restricted to the many fewer choices in the 245/75/17 size (which matches up with the OEM wheel/tire combo).

Preemptively, if I missed a more recent thread about this and I'm beating a dead horse, my apologies.

Sounds like the choice is between a well mannered on road vehicle or more Offroad ability. I would go pro if it were me.

Something else to consider. If you’re looking for Offroad capability, the TRD Offroad Premium offers the same amenities as the Pro but without the Toyota grill and valances. Up until 2019 they were nearly identical (cosmetic differences) but in 2019 they offered the Fox shocks.

The Offroad is also optioned with KDSS (kinetic dynamic suspension system, hydraulic linked sway bars) that improves on road manners and offered a little bit more articulation off road. The Pro doesn’t have this option.

Pro is for offroading, its the top of the line. Limited is a grocery wagon.

I own a pro and have driven the off-road premium with kdss and actually like it a lot better while driving on road.

So, initial consensus is that, on-road quality-driving-experience might be better in off-road premium than in either the TRD Pro or the Limited (especially the limited with OEM tires replaces by all-terrains, etc).

I would probably argue the statement that the Pro is top of the line for off-roading.

If the Pro was optioned with the KDSS I’d say yes but since it’s not I would have to give it to the TRD Off Road with KDSS followed by the Pro.

Well I will throw in here. If you are going to NOT mod the vehicle then get the PRO. If you are going to mod it and add aftermarket items then get the SR5 or Off-road with KDSS. Get the Limited if you want more luxury. I don't have KDSS and didn't want it. It rides just fine and I have a locker. love it.

What's the difference between the KDSS vs the Limited's X-REAS Sport Enhancement Suspension?

The KDSS is a system that connects the front and rear sway bars via hydraulic cylinders from & rear with accumulators on the driver side frame rail. The system is wholly independent from the actual shock absorbers. The sway bars are much beefier and connect directly to the lower control arms up front and rear axle on the rear. Although not a true sway bar disconnect like the Jeep Rubicon it does offer more articulation than a non KDSS equipped 4Runner

XREAS is a system that hydraulically connects the actual shock absorbers to each other and has no connection to the sway bars.

Both systems can be removed and isn’t dependent upon any other system on the 4R.

I know they are. That’s why I didn’t get the Pro. Salesman was really trying to upsell a pro to me but having a 2010 Trail with KDSS I was set on that option.

The Pro in my opinion is stupid. You pay a premium for getting less overall, your paying for a couple inexpensive visual changes and a suspension that falls short of high end aftermarket. There’s no logical justification in buying a pro unless it’s a limited paint color you can’t live without. If you have money to burn and you it’s impulse buy that you simple just want, whatever have at it, but let’s not pretend the value is there. All 4Runners have a real high resale value but the TuRD Pro does hold its value even better which almost seems impossible, but then again it’s still kind of the offroad/overlanding flavor of the month.

Get the pro if you venture off road. It's a no brainer. The limited is for the soccer moms .

Does this, from https://trail4runner.com/2018/03/03/trd-pro-vs-4runner-trd-off-road/ seem to reflect the majority of posts here? "Short Answer: Buy the TRD Off-Road Premium: The TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium have the KDSS option which kicks ass for on-road and off-road performance. KDSS makes the 4Runner much stiffer, reduces body roll, and nose dive."

It helps minimize body roll during on road driving and for Offroad it provides a little more stability and offers a bit more articulation I’ve the SR5, Limited And Pro models

Pro is for show, Offroad’s are for a Pro.

I wouldn't put crawl control high on the priority list, when considering all the other things mentioned in this thread. If it's there great. Cool to have it. But the trucks are plenty capable without it. It didn't even exist until very recently. And 99% of people aren't ever gonna see a need to use it. And many of those that might find themselves in a position of needing it could or would prefer to get out of trouble manually anyway.

I'm not bashing it or saying it's not effective. Just saying it'd be lower on my priority list than all the other things.

Crawl control entered the market around 2008, 11 years ago on the full bodied Land Cruiser. This was introduced on the 4Runners in 2010, 9 years ago so this isn’t exactly new technology. When it comes down to is. In 2008 the Land cruiser was optioned with crawl control, Multi Terrain select and KDSS and low and behold. In 2010 the 4Runner was optioned with the very SAME options. If you look at it. The 4Runner basically became the baby Land Cruiser. For Fucks Sake. It’s even built on the Prado 120 and 150 frame!

I own a 2018 TRD Pro in Calvary Blue. When I was shopping I really liked a lot of the features of the Limited and to be honest Toyota should include them in the Pro which costs more. They finally added some - like JBL, sun roof, and push button start. However, the Limited is really not as good of an offroad vehicle. The center locking differential is great if you live in snowy areas or like to go skiing but not really as useful for offroading as the rear locker. The Limited comes with big wheels, less armor, and has worse approach/departure angles. The XREAS may make lifting more difficult. However, the MAIN REASON I went with the TRD Pro was that I wanted to have the unique color. I don't understand why anyone would go with a TRD Pro in, say, black. Buy an Offroad Premium and mod it. So I would say the biggest driver in your decision should be the color unless you do not want the unique color. The next biggest driver is how much you intend to take it offroad. The Limited will do fine on fire roads and the like. What do you want to do with it?

It's true, the PRO, is an OFF-Road with an appearance package. All the items that make a PRO a PRO are put on at the port, nothing is factory. However, with the addition of the FOX suspension you are finally getting something different. So besides the fancy color and FOX suspension you are being ripped off. That is why I said if you plan on modding the PRO don't buy it. Why pay twice for things?

IF you are going to not mod the PRO at all, buy it because the resale is very good for shiny things.

Them switching to Fox isn’t a big deal in my opinion, Fox makes some very high quality stuff but their OEM equipment stuff is a very dumbed down basic cost cutting version of their of their quality stuff. It’s like Fox suspension on Raptors, it not the best but most people don’t actually use it to it’s full potential, it’s the bling factor and brand recognition they like. People really using them still need to upgrade pretty quick.

If you can't afford a pro settle for the offroad. Just plan on spending at least another $1,000 for the trd pro rims and install cause they all want them.

I agree but I still feel it's way better than the older TRD stuff. A definite upgrade from that.
