Theoretically needing to change differential fluid at 3 or 4 thousand miles is insanity. Not saying it's not needed just sayin...

 

on my 2000 GM truck I had to change the front diff 3 times until 11K miles on it. oil was gray color after my 1st oil change when I checked all the fluids.. rear diff looked good but why the front diff ? I did not use 4WD very much . but this is how these things happen .. still have this truck front diff oil still good ..175K on it .

 

Years ago this was a service practically nobody did and most people still don't today.

 

this fluid checking of the drive train fluids is a time consuming issue , so less profit .. just ram the vehicles in and out quickly more profit ..even when a dealership does your oil changes I doubt this will be checked ..
I was gonna have the dealership do the free oil changes .. I was gonna put white paint stripe on the plugs all..

Toyota owners manual states check all fluid levels and the drivetrain fluids ..this is free service the first 24 months . NO did not do it because they most likely will DO DAMAGE and not check anything ..even leaks ..

 

Maybe, maybe not. People worry like crazy about engine break-in and oil changes and whatnot, but the diffs break in too. And there's no filter to catch all the swarf. I think it might be $ well spent if you're keeping the 4R a long time.

 

I also have this noise starts at 65 mph and it gets louder when deaccelerate.any solution to this issu

 

I change rear diff gear oil 3 times already with Amsoil and no change howling is still present .any ideas

 

you may have a bearing issue . the front diff has had bearing failure due to install or the casting of the diff.. have dealership check this out .. some had noise and others vibs etc..
some also had this issue with very low miles on it .. also lifting the vehicle too much will create this sometimes

 

I will schedule appointment with dealer and let them know about front diff bearing thanks for information

 

I have the howling sound that is loud from 65-75mph. If I release the gas pedal it kinda squeaks a little then stops. It's weird. Been there since about 1000 miles.

 

I have the same noise noticed it some time after buying the 4R when I took it in for the free oil change I told them about this and also the sulfur smell when the rear window is down.. they told me the tech didn't hear anything and the smell is from paint on the engine being burned off

They also stripped the threads on the bolts that hold the skid plate I would advise anyone to stay away from the free oil changes if you plan on keeping the truck

 

your warning on the free oil changes is with many members. this is not just Toyota dealerships as I have worked on many vehicles and every vehicle that had oil changes done by quick lubes this was common.. they use powered tools and guess what happens .. also they may loose the bolts and leave only a couple to hold the pan/plastic covers ..

paint on new vehicle/engine will smell as it breaks in/ hot areas ... esp when the hot weather arrives .

 

An this is why I take the time and hassle to now do my own oil changes after the free ones. When I was getting the free ones I would always take the skid plate off myself, drive to the dealer, get the oil change, check their work (they over filled once and had to fix it), drive home, check for leaks, then mount the skid plate myself. Never trust a dealer monkey to do right by your vehicle.

A dealer monkey is the off the street trained oil change guy, not a factory trained tech

 

the dealer monkey is also the floor sweeper ... when I was in high school I was the floor sweeper in my uncles gas station ..

 

You do realize I'm talking about the exhaust gases being sucked back into the cabin right? Hmm I didn't think the engines we painted... nor have I ever smelled it before.....

 

the air intake sucks air in from the lower and upper front fenders.. the lower air intake is how the rats get into the air filter HVAC fan box.. I blocked off those openings had to remove wiper arms and the plastic grill then you can see how this can happen. so in traffic it can happen when new .. also if the rear hatch door window is open it will also cause exhaust to get into the vehicle interior..

Did the diff oil change make any difference?

 

Haven't done it yet. The howling seems to have subsided. Just made a 5k mile trip out west, and never noticed any noise. 10k miles on it now. But I still want to swap in some clean fluid now that it's good and broken in.

I’m new here...So I just bought a 2018 42K miles, SR5.
Two weeks later I’m hearing the same deceleration issues as mentioned here when lowering speeds from 70 mph to 60 mph.
Over the past month, I went to two Toyota dealerships who basically lied to me. Then after seeing a non Toyota mechanic who “heard” the problem and thankfully wrote up his analysis.
Then onto a third Toyota dealership who acknowledged the problem.

Just picked up the 4Runner tonight where they removed and replaced the rear differential, carrier assembly and gasket.

What the heck did I buy this big beautiful Truck for? Last Toyota I owned in 1985 was a Celica GT which lasted 348K miles.
Is this gonna be a beast to own and maintain?

 

No. Hopefully it will be good now for your entire ownership. However, it is a man made mechanical tool which may require some love from time to time. In other words, shit happens.

I got something going on with one of the computers that runs the multi terrain select. The dash lights up like a Christmas tree from time to time. Have to turn the vehicle off to reset it and then it happens again. It's happening more frequently now so I need to take it in and find out what is up.

 

My rear was replaced at 20K It's been quiet since [84k now]. My front diff was also replaced at 18 K.

 

ok, all read. Has a determination been made on the slight "howl" or "whine" when deceleration?

I pull a small UT and 15' tin boat, so had my '17 changed at 43k while receiving an oil change at the dealership. (as I do with both TOYO vehicles I use a dealership being they sell them so they own any issues dealing with service.) My next service (mid 50's) I will ask the service manager about the noise; if any concern I will post.

I am probably one of the few whose '08 TRD had its third member changed ( slipping/shutter on a turn) due to service failure not to add anti-slip; that on the dealers dime. So they are not bulletproof.

I also pull similar UT and a 14 ft. boat. The service manager told me the rear diff burned up most likely because the oil was too thin. He used 75/140 when they installed the new rear diff. It's be silent for 3 years. He also told me they see this failure on new Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner some with less than 500 miles. He suspected it was from break in heat from the factory 75/90 thinner oil.

 

Question for those guys the are getting the whine...

Has the whine been getting worst or has it stayed the same?

And has the whine definitely led to a differential failure?

I changed by front and rear diff oil about 5k ago and just recently noticed the whine. When I come off the accelerator or when Cruise Control lets off its quite noticeable (65-70 mph). But otherwise I don’t hear it. I am concerned about the longevity now that I hear it. It sucks because I love this truck and have it setup to my exact preferences and usage but lately I am starting to feel that I purchased a Friday afternoon special. My wheel speed sensor failed at 28k, rust/paint issues at 41k, and now this. And recently I had to put a seat cushion on my driver’s seat because I have severe wear on the center of the cushion (I only weight a 180 pounds). I am completing trading it in for another 4Runner that hopefully wasn’t built on a Friday. I take very good care of all my vehicle s my washing them monthly(more during salt season), wax every 3 months, and change all fluids regularly or by Toyota’s recommendations. As one can tell I am frustrated...

 

noise (whine) is most noticeable on deceleration, no diff. failure.

Oey12 I have to confuse, I am hearing impaired and didn't really notice the noise until my 50K service done at 46K, I wore my h-aids that day and heard the noise. Most of the time I don't wear devices as I hear loud noises. I will add that our roads are constantly under construction; repair or re-surface, and I run all season tires.

Most of what you have listed on your vehicle has been visited on this forum at some time. Both my '13 and '17 are mine; I don't see a reason the move to another vehicle/brand at this point. Good luck and Merry Christmas....

I wouldn’t move to another brand or even model for that matter. I think Toyota makes the best midsize trucks period. You are correct in saying that I have had commonly discussed issues but having so many is slightly concerning (admittedly I am OCD about my trucks-knowing it’s had auto body work drives me nuts). I get that it’s a mechanical item but my Mexican built Tacoma and Canadian built RAV4/Highlander held up much better. I am not judging the 4Runner by any means, I love them and would buy another one with ZERO concern, however my PARTICULAR truck has me thinking...

 

A few questions...have you ever had your 4 Runner in the water? Does your rear differential when you take the fill plug out run out like over filled? The last and most important question is when you take the fill plug out was there light gray strands or fully gray looking? While all 4 WD vehicles can traverse creeks short term...when you are submerged long term...more than 5 minutes...that nice warm differential will suck in water along with your transmission and transfer case UNLESS you have your breather tubes above that water level. I ran a hoses from all of my breathers up to one location on my fire wall...which is almost chest height...everyone should be sure if you plan on traversing deep creeks you do this or...when you get home change all your fluids...differentials, transmission and transfer cases...any thoughts from anyone are welcome and quite honestly very helpful...I hope this helps...
