Steel Rear bumper

Personally I have not seen anyone running 2 spare tires on dual swing outs. Here are some ideas from a previous dual swingouts thread. Better be a heavy duty bumper to handle this much weight.

I’m pulling the trigger on the victory bumper. I like the look and I like that I can instal the swing outs later. It will be a great project for me and the wifey. Downside is the cost of shipping($400)

 

Please post pics of the install if you can. Keen to learn if it is doable on a solo basis or big help is needed for this type of work.

Will do! Lead time looks like 3-4 weeks for fabrication. I just ordered the bumper, no swing outs yet. I’m planning on only installing one swing out for the spare tire and leave room for a ladder. I am going to install pod lights too and do the wiring with the wife so they will work when going in reverse.

 

That’s the plan for now. Since mine is a limited and I want to keep my back up sensors I will be drilling holes for the sensors(some extra bed liner to coat the inside of the bumper where I drill the holes since I live in the rust belt. Thank god I don’t have to worry about the blind spot monitoring system since limiteds don’t have it.

I didn't see it mentioned but i am running the Backwoods Adventure Mods dual swing on my 5th gen.
the lower portion of the bumper is made of steel and the swingarms are made of aluminum to save weight.

Currently running our Jerrys Can holder and a 35 on it and have had no issues out of it.

 

too bad you dont have the option of not having dual swingouta bc thats a nice bumper!

 

The nicest bumper from a looks standpoint (it also seems nicely built) is the Demello. Really nice lines that complement the 4runner.

You can buy them without the swing outs. Unfortunately, even without them, it costs 3,400 bucks. That’s just nuts.

It’s much more practical to a run a cheap aftermarket bumper cover, trimmed up at the corners however you please for clearance, and replace them if they get torn off. Keep them black to look badass (and to keep it cheap). You could replace unpainted aftermarket bumper covers 30 times and still come out ahead.

But I’ve run my stock cover through more than I ever thought I would, and only have a few scratches at the bottom corners. So for most, even those that wheel moderately hard, the stock bumper covers on a slightly lifted 4runner is hardly ever going to get torn off.

I went 80% offroad and am very happy with it. Minimalist, not alot of weight and keeps factory lines. Also did not have to cut cross member or lose factory reciever hitch.

 

I have the bumper and I am waiting to take it to my friends shop where he lets me use his lift and tools. It comes on a crate with all the hardware. It wont be much longer and I will be sure to update you all.

So the bumper is in!!!!!
I have a limited so of course it was not as straight forward as the videos or the pdf. I had a lot of help and I would probably get it done professionally. The cutting was the biggest issue and we had to cut more and less in certain areas. The hardware that came with the light pods also didn’t fit but was able to use other parts. The fit is amazing and does not look bulky or out of place.

How many grown men did it took to install it?

 

Question on the underside. Did the bumper address sealing up the gap from all the cutting of plastic required? I am wondering if this is an unintended consequence of going aftermarket bumpers.

The first mud I hit it was a real mess how much got packed up there. @1SilverRunner had a great idea modeling ABS plastic covering it up solving the problem. Maybe this is a one off though other brands have addressed.

 

Aside from the side cut that needs to be patched up, the cut that goes flush with the tailgate has no spaces for mud.

 

I think some are hoping for photos from a bit further out to see the whole bumper...

 

The bumper is heavy! We used two floor jacks and two guys guiding it into place while I was underneath putting in the primary bolts.

 

The pdf and the video were good for visuals however the process for my limited dimensions for cutting was different. I would just recommend leaving more plastics than you think and trim as needed. The bumper is flush with the cargo area and any places were water could get in is covered by the tailgate.

 

I’m currently have photos from the instal so I can get better photos with the tailgate closed and with better lighting. I didn’t want to keep everyone waiting. The lighting for pods will be done at some point. I ordered an OEM looking switch from 4runnerlifestyle so I can control when I have the rear bumper lights on. It will take a while to do so since I will need to take a lot of body panels out to reach my driver side.

 

Looks like a great bumper. Are you planning any rear suspension upgrades to mitigate the weight addition?

 

Honestly I’m very happy with it. If you can do it yourself and you have a few friends to help it can be done. For the sake of ease and convenience I have a guy who lets me use his tools. This made it easier and his knowledge in doing bumpers helped a lot. The 2000 dollars plus 500 to ship may be a turn off for some. The C4 is an arm and a leg and if you want swing outs it’s even more since you can’t buy just the bumper and ad swing outs later.

My Xreas system that comes with limited trim levels is still kicking so once it needs to be replaced I will be putting in a real lift kit. Depending on how much the swing out and tire effect the rear suspension I may get stronger springs until I get the lift kit.
